Neil Diamond jetted to Boston on Saturday to support the city in the wake of this week’s bombings.
The singer — whose hit “Sweet Caroline” is routinely played during the seventh-inning stretch at Red Sox games — flew to Boston to perform it in person this weekend, taking the crowd by surprise.
“What an honor it is to be here today. I bring love from the whole country,” Neil (wearing a Red Sox baseball hat) told the cheering crowd before launching into the song.
The singer’s rep told The Hollywood Reporter the appearance was his own idea, and that as soon as he learned of the game, he “took a red-eye flight with his wife, Katie McNeil, from Los Angeles to Boston and made his way to Fenway directly from the airport in time for the game’s opening ceremony.”
“I was humbled and honored to be in Boston and to be able to personally thank and express my gratitude to the first responders and law enforcement officers,” Neil said in a statement.
The iconic singer later Tweeted a photo of himself with Boston law enforcement officials with the caption, “In the company of heroes.”
