Neil Patrick Harris Talks Returning To ‘How I Met Your Mother’ & ‘American Idol’ Rumors

Neil Patrick Harris and the rest of his “How I Met Your Mother” co-stars are in the midst of their seventh successful season, and with just one more to go on their contracts, could the popular CBS series be coming to a close?

“We’re signed up for one more. We were signed up for eight years, so this is our seventh. We’ll do one more, [which] is eight, and then we’ll see,” Neil told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover on Monday’s Access Hollywood Live.

“I would love to do more [of the show,]” the actor explained. “This is a great job.”

And would the cast (Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders and Alyson Hannigan) renegotiate their contracts as a group, similar to how the cast of “Friends” banned together in their heyday?

“I don’t think so… we all kind of do our things,” the 38-year-old said. “I would assume that people like Jason Segel make like a gazillion dollars because he’s a big movie star.”

According to NPH, things couldn’t be better on the set of their comedy.

“We’re just super happy. ‘How I Met Your Mother’ is as strong as it’s ever been. We’re loving the show and we all get along very well,” he continued. “I think we’re going to look back on this chapter, whenever it’s done, and just be like, ‘It was never as good as that.’”

As for rumors that NPH is being eyed for Ryan Seacrest’s “American Idol” hosting job, the 38-year-old actor told Billy and Kit not to believe the reports.

“I found that out too, online, that apparently I was supposed to replacing Ryan Seacrest,” he said in disbelief. “I would not want to do that job at all. I’d rather be a judge on ‘American Idol.’ That seems like the fun gig. You don’t have to memorize, you just sit there and judge if they’re good or bad. But, poor Seacrest has to read that little teleprompter thing.”

The actor also spoke with Billy and Kit about his 15-month-old twins, Gideon and Harper, who he has with fiance David Burtka and whether the happy couple wants more.

“I don’t know,” he said. “Kids are great and super fun, but now we have one boy and one girl, and they’re both kind of great and I don’t know.”

“How I Met Your Mother” returns with a new episode on February 6 on CBS at 8 PM.
