Neil Patrick Harris To Wed David Burtka Following Five-Year Engagement

Neil Patrick Harris and his longtime partner, David Burtka, have revealed they’ve been engaged for over five years and are planning to wed, following the passage of marriage equality in the New York State Senate.

“David and I did propose to each other, but over five years ago!” Neil Tweeted on Saturday. “We’ve been wearing engagement rings for ages, waiting for an available date.”

David also shared the happy news with a Twitter follower, writing, “I’ve already purposed, he said yes! Thank god!

Adding, “He proposed to me as well. I said yes! Thank god!”

The “How I Met Your Mother” star and his actor/chef beau began dating in 2004.

The happy couple are proud parents of twins Gideon Scott and Harper Grace, whom they welcomed with the help of a surrogate in October 2010, and Neil pleaded with the Senate via Twitter to allow their family the right to make their union official.

“I’d sure love to get married. Please, NY Senate, vote in favor of marriage equality today,” he Tweeted on Friday. “My family would really appreciate it.”

After news of the law’s passage broke, an elated Neil – along with a host of other stars – took to Twitter to celebrate the victory.

“It PASSED! Marriage equality in NY!! Yes!! Progress!!” Neil Tweeted Friday evening. “Thank you everyone who worked so hard on this!! A historic night!”
