Nick Cannon Admits He Scrutinized Child Protective Services Rep’s Badge Before Talking After Twins’ Births; Was Concerned It Was A Set Up

When Nick Cannon was approached by Child Protective Services not long after the birth of his twins over rumors that wife Mariah Carey was consuming alcohol and prescription drugs before breast feeding their babies Moroccan and Monroe, he had a skeptical eye.

When asked by Access Hollywood Live’s Kit Hoover on Friday if he was, at the time, concerned over whether the whole situation was actually a paparazzi set up, Nick admitted he had the situation checked out before speaking on the record.

“That was the thing. We analyzed the badge really well and notified the lawyers [to] make sure that [it] was really legit, because it was silly at the end of the day,” the star told Kit and Access Hollywood Live co-host Billy Bush. “And for somebody even try to go that far to conjure up a story was ridiculous.”

Once the person was verified, Nick did all he could to shield his wife, Mariah, from having to deal with the inquiry that came while they were still at the hospital trying to enjoy the glow of welcoming their first children into the world late last month.

“To have to deal with that? I felt really bad for my wife to have to deal with that,” Nick said.

Nick told Billy and Kit that he fended off questions about a host of allegations someone made to CPS.

“It was a bunch of stuff. It was [drinking Guinness] and they tried to say it was like medical drugs and stuff,” he recounted, still surprised that the couple were even investigated at all. “I was like how would that even happen in the hospital? Like, that doesn’t even like make sense, and it didn’t make sense to the Child Protective Service people either. But I guess you can’t play around with them. You call them and they have to come out.”

Although he did all he could, Nick said Mariah did have to speak with the CPS official, but things ended on a positive note.

“Yeah she did [have to speak to the person]. After the whole thing was over though, they kind of came and apologized,” he said. “I got the brunt of the investigation and I kind of headed it off before it got to my wife because I didn’t wanna her to have to deal with that.”

Pretty soon, the couple will get some peace away from hospitals and officials as they are preparing to take the children home shortly.

“Sunday or Monday at the latest,” Nick said. “They’ll be home soon.”
