Nick Cannon Defends Mariah Carey’s New Year’s Eve Performance: ‘She Can Do No Wrong’

Nick Cannon
has come to Mariah Carey’s defense.

More than
two weeks after technical difficulties plagued his ex-wife’s now-infamous New
Year’s Eve performance, Nick used humor to address the situation on Monday’s
Ellen.”

“I’m a conspiracy theorist. I think the government did
that, they set her up. That was a distraction,” he joked to host Ellen
DeGeneres.

While Nick admitted that the music superstar may have gotten “a little flustered” during the snafu, he said she couldn’t have handled the incident more appropriately.

“[B]eing the diva that she is, she was like, ‘I’m just going to walk around and pose for seven minutes,'” he smiled. “Like Ryan Seacrest said, ‘She can do no wrong.’ She worked through it.”

Ellen also applauded Nick for how he and Mariah have handled their relationship since officially divorcing last year. The former spouses are active co-parents to 5-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe, and have both shared post-split family photos of the foursome on social media.

“It’s all rooted in love, and we got so much love for those two kids that we’ll do anything for them,” Nick said.

Nick then recalled his own onstage experience to express solidarity with the singer, and explain why he believes she wasn’t at fault.

“Anyone who knows about performing and having inner ears and stuff like that, things like that can go wrong on live television,” he said. “I do live television all the time. I screw up on ‘America’s Got Talent’ all the time.”

The 36-year-old will soon welcome a new addition to his brood. Nick and ex-girlfriend Brittany Bell are expecting a baby boy in “a month and some change,” an event the soon-to-be father of three called a “celebration.”

However, Ellen pointed out that the pregnancy contradicts a future Nick once had planned for himself.

When asked what became of his previous declaration to stay celibate, Nick admitted that the strategy obviously didn’t quite go according to plan.

“Working through being single and everything like that, you have people that you meet and connect with,” he said. “I connected a little too well, I guess.”
