Nick Jonas On ‘Jealous’ Success & His ‘Incredibly Important’ ‘Kingdom’ Storyline

It’s been a busy summer for Nick Jonas, who is not only filming his DirecTV series “Kingdom,” but touring to promote his solo music.

The actor, singer and songwriter has been on the charts recently (with “Jealous” and “Chains”) and having people respond to his new material has been really rewarding he told Kit Hoover on Friday’s Access Hollywood Live.

“It’s been a crazy year-and-a-half, a lot of really special experiences and things that even in my eight year journey with my brothers that I never experienced, that I’m experiencing now,” Nick told Kit, referring to his time in the Jonas Brothers with siblings Kevin and Joe.

“And just seeing the people connect with the music that I made, you know, I took a chance and stepped out on my own and tried to do something different, which is always scary, but I really feel like in kind of just being authentic and true to what was relevant to me and what I want to talk about, it connected with people,” he continued. “And between ‘Jealous’ and ‘Chains’ and now a new song, ‘Good Things’ with Sage The Gemini,’ it’s fun. I’m just really thrilled with how it’s all gone.”

Nick’s TV show “Kingdom,” on DirecTV, was picked up for two seasons not long after it premiered, and he is currently filming Season 2 now. To play Nate Kulina on the drama set in the mixed martial arts world, Nick has to stay in top shape. For the new episodes though, he told Kit he had to slim down.

“The storyline this season is I go down a weight class for fighting, so I’ve had to lean up a little bit,” he told Kit.

“When you play a fighter, it’s your job to be in shape, basically, and the good news is that our set is actually a real gym, so we push each other there, and we get it done when we can,” he added.

At the end of Season 1, it was revealed that the character Nate is gay, and Nick told Kit he knew about the storyline early on.

“Our showrunner is this amazing guy named Byron [Balasco] and he gave me a heads up before anybody else and there were some things in the writing throughout the season leading up to it that would suggest maybe that was the case, but until the end [of the first season] we don’t know,” Nick said.

“It’s an incredibly important story,” he added. “The world that we create with the show is very masculine and it’s a world of fighting and all this stuff and so someone dealing with this – a story of self-discovery and trying to understand who they are, I think is really important right now and I’m honored to tell it.”

“Kingdom” returns to DirecTV later this year.
