Nigel Lythgoe Gears Up For National Dance Day, Dizzy Feet Gala

Nigel Lythgoe is keeping mum on his rumored return to “American Idol,” but one thing which the “So You Think You Can Dance” judge and executive producer is buzzing about is National Dance Day.

Nigel spearheaded the charge to create National Dance Day, which will take place this year on July 31, and will be recognized with an official act of Congress.

“I’d been reading all the stories about obesity and like 68% of us are overweight or obese over the age of 20 in this country and I thought, ‘Well what better way to sort of help with fitness and health than get everyone dancing?’” he told AccessHollywood.com’s Laura Saltman on Thursday night.

Additionally, on National Dance Day, a host of flash mobs – choreographed dances that appear in a spontaneous fashion – will crop up across the U.S., including one at the Music Center at the Performance Arts Center of Los Angeles at 10 AM on July 31.

“I can’t name them all because it’s really down to individuals,” Nigel said when Laura asked about the other locations. “It’s not about any organization organizing it for them. It’s about taking the initiative and doing something.”

As for the LA flash mob, those wishing to take part can go to DizzyFeetFoundation.org to learn the routine created for that event by NappyTabs, the husband and wife team of Napoleon and Tabitah D’umo.

“You can go to it, learn it, post your version of it and we could put it on the show here on ‘So You Think You Can Dance,’” Nigel said of the reach of the campaign.

Nigel is also planning a Dizzy Feet Gala on August 21, but he noted Katie Holmes, a board member for the Foundation, wouldn’t be at the event.

“She won’t be. She’s filming but she’s leaving us a little message,” he said. “A very little message.”

“Maybe from Suri?” Laura asked.

“Maybe,” Nigel said.

In addition, Dizzy Feet are sponsoring a contest for a dancer or a group of dancers to perform at the August 21 gala.
