Nina Dobrev’s Elena Gilbert is
returning to “The Vampire Diaries” for the series finale.
The actress posted a photo of the script
for Season 8, Episode 16 – the series finale – on her Instagram on Thursday,
confirming her return to “TVD.”
“I know it’s Thursday, but
this is not a TBT. #BackOnSet #TVDForever,” she wrote to accompany the pic
of a script with her name on it.
Executive Producer Julie Plec, who is directing the episode, said in a statement, “I’m thrilled to bring this show to an end the way we always intended – with Nina back to help us say goodbye.”
Fellow Executive Producer Kevin Williamson also shared his excitement over Nina’s return in his statement.

“I’m so excited to have Nina back to ensure our farewell episode is truly epic,” his statement read.
Older scenes from the show featuring Nina’s character have been peppered throughout the eighth and final season as Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) struggles to retain his memories of the love of his life. Siren Sybil (Nathalie Kelley) has been trying to replace them in order to control him to do her bidding.
When Nina left the show at the end of Season 6, her character, Elena, was put into a sleep state by Kai (Chris Wood). Her life is tied to best friend Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham). As long as Bonnie lives, Elena sleeps.
Back at The CW’s portion of last summer’s Television Critics Association Summer Tour, CW President Mark Pedowitz confirmed there were talks to bring Nina back before the end of the show.

“There are discussions going on with Nina,” he said, in response to a question from AccessHollywood.com. “We’d love to have her come back. She was great for The CW. She was integral for ‘The Vampire Diaries.'”
The series finale of “TVD” airs on March 10 at 8/7c on The CW.
