On The Download: Estelle

One of the perks of working at an entertainment news outlet is you get advance copies of new music. And it is especially gratifying when you pop a promo disc into your CD player — and are met with a sonic work of art.

Such was the case with UK bred singer/rapper Estelle.

Listening to her sophomore release “Shine” brings back memories of hearing “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” for the very first time.

Both artists ring through your ears with their commanding yet smooth voices, their extreme talents in singing and rapping, and their abilities to effortlessly mix elements of Hip-Hop, Soul, Doo-Wop, and Dancehall Reggae.

Estelle’s latest single, “American Boy,” features Kanye West and Estelle trading rhymes, over a funky Will.I.Am produced track. When she sings, her jazzy vocals fall somewhere between Ms. Hill and Lily Allen. The track is already a major hit in the UK and is currently taking off stateside.

Estelle’s disc “Shine,” which is set to be released April 29, also features John Legend, Gnarls Barkley crooner Cee-Lo, Wyclef Jean and Grammy Award winning Amy Winehouse producer Mark Ronson. And it really can’t hurt that the queen of pop herself, Madonna, recently confessed to being a fan.

Simply put – Estelle’s got it going on, download this brilliant album when it comes out, you wont be sorry…
