On The Download: Grammy Picks, Best Rap Album

The Nominees:
American Gangster – Jay-Z
Tha Carter III – Lil Wayne
The Cool – Lupe Fiasco
Nas – Nas
Paper Trail – T.I.

In the category of Best Rap Album, hip hop’s former undisputed king, Jay-Z, squares off against new ruler (and Grammy’s most nominated artist this year) Lil’ Wayne. In true hip hop fashion – both MC’s appear on tracks from each other’s nominated albums.

Also receiving nods in this category are Jay’s former rival, Queensbridge rap legend Nas, conscious MC Lupe Fiasco, and recently incarcerated radio friendly “King” of the South, T.I.

While Lupe Fiasco is an ultra-talented wordsmith and songwriter whose album, “The Cool,” was a breath of fresh air in the mundane world of rap music, the Grammy’s Rap category tends to be a popularity contest, making him a long shot to win behind four better-selling, not to mention, more popular, artists.

That being said, Jay-Z and Nas are legends in the game and T.I. continues to release multi-platinum discs. But this year belongs to Wheezy.

He’s Hip-Hop’s new King… Love him or hate him, this is his year and he will take home the trophy.

Should Win: Lupe Fiasco

Will Win: Lil’ Wayne
