On The Download: Prince

Prince fans (and even if you aren’t a Prince fan) will find a nice bang for your buck in his “Purple Majesty’s” latest musical offering. It’s a three disc set including two of Prince’s latest discs, “LOtUSFLOW3R” [Lotus flower], “MPLSoUND” [Minneapolis Sound], and a disc titled “Elixer,” the debut album from Prince’s protégé, Bria Valente.

The discs won’t hit Target stores exclusively until March 29, but you will be able to get digital downloads from LOTUSFLOW3R.COM, Prince’s very cool and quite purple Web site.

Also this Saturday, the day before the album drops, Prince will be performing at three different locations in the Los Angeles area with three different bands to promote his new Web site…

Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE — Doors open at 5:30 PM

Conga Room — Doors open at 8:00 PM.

Club Nokia — Doors open at 11:30 PM

Tickets for each of the three performances are $77.00 plus applicable fees and service charges.

If you are not in the LA area, fear not. Prince is also scheduled to play three nights in a row on the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on March 25,26 and 27, and will return to help Leno end his run on the late night show by performing on Leno’s next to last show on May 28.

So what can you expect from Prince’s three-disc offering?

The first disc we were introduced to at the LA listening party, “LOtUSFLOW3R,” is a combination of psychedelic and very easy to listen to rock cuts. Do not be fooled though, as the first disc is not all rock. Prince also manages to mix in a dynamic couple of cuts that have a jazz and almost samba-esque rhythm, which makes this disc a well rounded kickoff.

The second disc, “MPLSoUND,” is a return to the Prince that folks my age are familiar with. In my opinion it had a lot of the old-school Prince sound, but with very new flavor.

There is a mix of danceable numbers and those fans looking for a “Purple Rain” kind of sexy and smooth flow, there’s that as well! No matter what, you will find yourself tapping your feet and actually rocking’ back and forth.

The third disc — Valente’s “Elixer” — is just that, a very sweet blend of sultriness.

This young lady has a voice that matches her beauty, and it’s about as smooth as hot chocolate sauce pouring out over two scoops of ice cream. She is quite dynamic with her vocals, range and the musical accompaniment is right on. Overall, this was a nice offering of music for a nice price too, who could beat 12 bucks for three new CDs of new music.
