On The Download: Sally Seltmann

Becoming a Sally Seltmann fan is as easy as “1234” – the song which she wrote for Feist that became a breakthrough hit.

Though her own material has yet to win her spots on late night talk shows or “Sesame Street,” the Australian singer-songwriter is an enchanting artist in her own right. Sally’s latest album, “Heart That’s Pounding” – her first under her own name after two critically acclaimed releases as New Buffalo – is a collection of pop songs sweeter than a package of Peeps.

On songs such as first single, “Harmony To My Heartbeat,” as well as on “Sentimental Seeker,” the singer showcases a bright, breathy voice that feels like an old (extremely talented!) friend, with simple, upbeat backing from her trusty Roland keyboard and a full band.

As a lyricist, Sally, who’s married to Avalanches member Darren Seltmann, writes of domestic scenes (“Book Song,” which praises the virtues of reading and coffee in the morning), falling in love and besting her shyness (“Dream About Changing”). Indeed, she sounds more confident than ever, and though Sally’s unlikely to opt for the glitzy style of other synth-playing chanteuses like Little Boots or Ladyhawke, songs this good shouldn’t go unnoticed for long.
