One Direction fans saw a whole new side of the British boy band when they dropped the video for their new single, “Best Song Ever” – which included Zayn Malik dressed a woman – a sight that Liam Payne calls the “weirdest experience of my life.”
“When I walked in he was full on frontal nude with boobs out,” Liam told Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson.
In addition to seeing Zayn in drag, the video shows the guys in a variety of unrecognizable getups including Louis Tomlinson as a bald music producer, Niall Horan as an older record executive, Harry Styles as a bumbling nerd and Liam as a flamboyant choreographer.
“It was the weirdest experience of my life,” Liam said of seeing Zayn’s transformation.
“We didn’t know what Zayn was going look like as a woman. So we walk into this room and he’s just standing there with his breasts out. So it was quite strange to look at. Zayn with breasts,” Niall added in. “But he’s quite an attractive woman.”
Zayn explained that he found that playing a woman to be no easy task.
“It was quite interesting,” Zayn said of his music video role. “The heels were quite difficult to walk in. I have a new respect for women that walk in heels… and it was quite difficult carrying huge breasts around. And the hair kind of got in my mouth and was like getting in my lip gloss.”
1D fans appear to love the song – and their transformations – as “Best Song Ever” debuted in second place on the HOT 100 singles charts in the US – an accomplishment that left one of the band members injured.
“Niall did a little jump and his knee dislocated,” Zayn said of what the guys did when they heard the chart news.
“It’s always a bit strange when you come out with new stuff because you don’t really know [how the fans will react], especially when you kind of change the sound around a little bit,” Liam said. “We were really happy with the record, so we were excited [it did so well].”
In addition to their new single, 1D has dolls, a perfume, a book and a concert documentary, “One Direction: This is Us,” hitting theaters on August 30.
