‘Orphan Black’: Jordan Gavaris, Ari Millen & John Fawcett Preview Season 3

“Orphan Black” returns Saturday night on BBC America, and in Season 3, the world of the show is expanding.

Tatiana Maslany ‘s women of Project Leda, including Sarah, Cosima, Alison and Helena, recently found out they aren’t the lone clone project out there, and this season, more men from Project CASTOR, played by Ari Millen, are coming.

“With the wild types with Leda, it was always a question of nature vs. nurture, but with CASTOR, the nurture is pretty consistent,” Jordan Gavaris, who plays Felix, told Access Hollywood of the background of Ari’s clone men. “They are born and bred in the military, so it will be interesting to see what kind of variance we can have when the characters kind of all shared a very similar upbringing, because it’s great watching [Tatiana] differentiate these women when they’ve all had totally varied histories, but to have a bunch of men who look the same, who were raised kind of the same way, it’ll be interesting.”

One of the clones everyone is a little worried about is Rudy, aka “Scarface.”

“I think Rudy’s the type of guy who’s always the smartest guy in the room,” Ari said of his character, who was caged up when he was introduced at the end of Season 2.

But is Rudy as scary as a Hannibal Lecter type?

“I think it’s an act a lot of the time,” Ari told Access. “I think he really enjoys pushing people’s buttons and if it takes Hannibal Lecter, or sort of an unhinged personality to put someone off their game, then yeah, he’ll do that, but he’s got other cards up his sleeve.”

Another of Ari’s clones — Mark, who was once a member of the Proletheans cult, but ran away at the end of last season with his girl, Gracie – wants to try to live his life freely in Season 3. But, don’t expect that to be easy.

“Mark and Gracie eloped at the end of the season and I think Mark has decided he wants no more part of the life that he used to live – the CASTOR boys,” Ari said. “If he could have a white picket fence and an acre of land and just sort of, you know, live out his days in a happy family, that would be his ideal, but CASTOR is not going to make it easy for him.”

Ari said that as the episodes roll out, CASTOR and Leda will be in conflict, and once again, Sarah holds a particular interest to all parties.

“What we’ll learn in Season 3 is that Project CASTOR definitely has its own agenda and it is not cohesive with Project Leda,” he said. “They definitely have an interest in discovering the science that created them all and they’re — in the same way — trying to answer their own questions, so they have a definite interest in Sarah and the rest of her sisters for sure.”

Tatiana’s character Cosima will be pursuing answers in a new way following her brush with death at the end of Season 2, according to one of the creators of the show, John Fawcett.

“Cosima’s health is still an extremely important aspect to the show. I think at the end of Season 2, Cosima has had a very close brush with her own mortality and has had an experience that she can’t explain and I think that it launches the character in… a very different direction for Cosima, where she is not necessarily looking for the answers in science,” John said.

She’ll also be growing closer to Felix, Jordan told Access.

“What I love about Cosima is that no matter who she’s talking to, there’s no disparity, no inequity. She could be the smartest person in the room, but she’ll give her attention to whoever she’s talking to as if they are entirely her equal, and so many of the other characters treat Felix kind of like the accessory — the crisis counsellor, the best friend, the number you call when you can’t call anybody else. And they finally sit down – Cosima and Felix — and you’ve just got a couple of people talking about life and love and it just made him so much more human,” Jordan told Access. “Even if it’s just for 30 seconds or 30 minutes, it makes him so much more human.”

Helena may be in the hands of Paul’s gang now, but we had to ask if there was any chance Patrick J. Adams, who played her bar boyfriend in Season 2, could come back.

“We hope so,” John said.

“There’s been a Twitter campaign and we’ve taken it very seriously,” Jordan added.
