Snubs:
– Dreamgirls – No Best Picture or Best Director nom
– No nom for Ben Affleck, Jack Nicholson or Brad Pitt

Surprises:
– Paul Greengrass Best Director nom for United 93
– Abigail Breslin Best Supporting Actress nom
– Jackie Earle Haley, Alan Arkin, Mark Wahlberg & Djimon Hounsou Best Supporting Actor nom
– Ryan Gosling Best Actor nom
– Little Miss Sunshine Best Picture nom

Facts:

– With his eighth acting nom, for “Venus,” Peter O’Toole is a winner either way. If he wins, great; if not, he goes down in the record books as the actor with the most noms without a win (he was previously tied with Richard Burton).
– Kevin O’Connell, nommed for sound mixing in “Apocalypto,” scores his 19th nom. He furthers his status as the Academy’s most nominated individual who, so far, hasn’t won. Distant runners-up are composer Alex North and art director Roland Anderson, at 15 each.
– “Dreamgirls” is the first live-action film to have three of its songs nominated. Two animated films can lay claim to the same record: “The Lion King” in 1994 and “Beauty and the Beast” in 1991.
– “I Need to Wake Up” from “An Inconvenient Truth” is the first song from a docu to be nominated since “More” from “Mondo Cane” was up for the award in 1963.
– With “Little Children,” Kate Winslet, 31, becomes the youngest actress to garner five noms. She has made 19 movies. Previous record holder was Olivia de Haviland, who secured her fifth at the age of 33. By that time — 1950 — she had made 33 films.
– 10 out of the 20 actors nominated are 1st time nominees
– Clint Eastwood is a double nominee
– Penelope Cruz is the first Spanish actress to receive a nomination
– Jackie Earle Haley’s last major film was 1983’s Losin’ It starring opposite Tom Cruise
– 13 out of the 25 major nominees are foreigners- Alan Arkin has gone 38 years since his last nom –1968’s “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter” — the same amount of time Jack Palance spent between “Shane” in 1953 and “City Slickers” in 1991. Henry Fonda is still the title holder at 41 years between acting noms.
– Abigail Breslin, 10, is the youngest nominee this year
– Clint Eastwood, 76, is the oldest nominee this year
-If you add up the grosses for all of the film’s nominated for Best Picture: Babel ($24), The Departed ($122), Letters from Iwo Jima ($2), Little Miss Sunshine ($60), The Queen ($36) they all total $244 million — the same number as Cars ($244) did alone domestically.
– Dreamgirls is the most nominated film with 8 noms
– Babel received 7 noms
– Pan’s Labyrinth and The Queen received 6 noms
– Blood Diamond and The Departed received 5 noms
– With her 14th nom, Meryl Streep (“The Devil Wears Prada”) furthers her lead for most nominated actor ever. Runners-up are Jack Nicholson and Katharine Hepburn, with 12 apiece.
– Alan Arkin’s last nomination was in 1968
– Kate Winslet, 31, became the youngest nominee to receive her 5th nomination
– Judi Dench is the only nominee who was nominated last year
– 4 out of the 5 Supporting Actress nominees are 1st timers
– With her 14th nomination Meryl Streep continues her reign as the most nominated actor in Oscar history
