‘Outlander’: 8 Fun Finds In The Blu-Ray Special Features

The “Outlander” Blu-Ray finally hit store shelves on Tuesday.

Boasting plenty of special features goodness, it is helping make the wait until the show’s return to Starz on April 4 shorter.

“Outlander” Season 1, Volume 1 collects together the first eight episodes of the stunning series, six special featurettes and 21 deleted scenes. After scanning through all of the bonus materials, we put together a list of eight fun things from the release that are helping to minimize #Droughtlander. (Editor’s note: some features were released online as part of #Droughtlander.)

A Closer Look At Terry Dresbach’s Workspace

Costumes from Terry Dresbach and her team have been utterly divine, so it was nice to take a trip in the featurette “Authentic in Design: The Dresses & Kilts of Outlander” into the “Outlander” costume department workspace. “My research started 20 years ago when I first read the books, so a lot of what you’ll see on screen is what I always saw in my head,” Dresbach explains in the segment, as we get to see stunning sketches, pictures, fabrics and lace filling various walls, while another wall has a floor-to-ceiling chalkboard showing off even more creativity from this bustling on set area.

Rupert & Angus!

Highlanders Rupert and Angus were a crack up on screen, and behind the scenes, the actors who play Dougal’s boys – Grant O’Rourke (Rupert) and Stephen Walters (Angus Mhor), are just as hilarious. In particular, in “Emerging a Scot: Cast Goes to Bootcamp,” Grant had us chuckling with this particular gem in reference to all the horseback riding training: “I don’t really have a bond with animals and particularly horses. I would rather just get a bus.”

Sam Heughan’s Kind-Of Impression Of Gary Lewis & Graham McTavish

Sam has great respect for his co-stars, Gary, who plays his uncle Colum, and Graham, who plays his uncle Dougal, but he also addressed the fun moments with them on set, which he described in the “Casting Outlander” featurette. “It’s nice to sort of see them try and out man each other and become more gravely and more Scottish,” Sam said, throwing on a Gary/Graham-esque mashup impression.

Leeches!?!

The lovely bonding scene where Claire patched up Jamie after he took Laoghaire’s beating in the “Castle Leoch” episode was – based on the “Do You Know Her” deleted scene — much longer. This extra has much more of the lovely Mrs. Fitz (Annette Badland), who showed off her own healing skills putting leeches (since it’s not finished, it’s just special stickers) on Jamie’s face to decrease the swelling around his eye.

“Outlander’s” On Set Motto

On “A Walk Through the Sets & Stages with Ronald D. Moore,” the executive producer gives a tour of the studios, and at one point, leans next to a sign. “We have one motto here at ‘Outlander'” he says, pointing at some white lettering on black paper. It reads: “Do Epic Sh***.”

Murtagh Squaring Off With Dougal

We just can’t get enough of Duncan Lacroix as Jamie’s right hand man and surrogate dad, Murtagh, and there’s even more reasons to love his character in the “Why Jamie” deleted scene from “The Wedding” episode. He squares off against Graham McTavish’s Dougal MacKenzie for forcing Jamie into a marriage, and tries to get Jamie to see Dougal’s political motives. While we are, of course, elated Jamie went through with it and said “I do” with Claire, we loved seeing more of Murtagh having Jamie’s back!

More Frank & Claire!

While the scene we’ll never forget from “The Garrison Commander” is Black Jack’s slow interrogation of Claire, “The Idea of Marriage” deleted scene is another moment we want to watch on repeat for another reason – the love story of Frank and Claire. A chat between Claire and Jamie – their first after learning they are betrothed — prompts Claire to have a flashback (flash-forward?) to her early days with Frank, as they toasted to new beginnings. “No matter what happens, I’ll always be your wife,” Claire tells Frank as the sun starts to fade.

All Of The Deleted Scenes From “The Wedding” Episode

Longer vows, different vows, a different kiss, Ned Gowan and his lady friend looking a little cozy at the service, the very sneezy priest, as well as more from the wedding night – like jeers from the men downstairs (one involving a large piece of meat), are all fascinating to watch.

“Outlander” Volume 1, Part 1 is out on Blu-Ray now. The series returns for the second half of Season 1, April 4 on Starz.
