Prince Oberyn and The Mountain didn’t get along inside the ring, but outside of work, Pedro Pascal’s relationship with his “Game of Thrones” Season 4 co-star, Hafthor Julius Bjornsson, is just fine.
(Spoiler Alert: This story contains plot twist details from the most recent episode of “GoT”.)
On Sunday night’s “Thrones,” Pedro’s character, Prince Oberyn Martell, met a particularly grisly end at the hands of Ser Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane during their arena duel. But, a day after that episode aired, Pedro posted a photo on Instagram of the two actors – out of costume and shirtless — with the caption, “Buds.”
Pedro’s Instagram account (and several of the cast’s) grew in popularity during Season 4, and he recently told Access he was surprised to see how it took off.
“I was a little naive, I think, early on, because I was relishing the experience I was having on a personal level and Instagram was pretty new to me, “ he told AccessHollywood.com.
“Early on, it was kind of like, you know, showing off to my family and friends and just being kind of like, ‘Look at what I’m doing,’” he laughed.
As for his character’s recent exit in Sunday’s episode, Pedro, a fan of the show and George R.R. Martin’s books, was crushed on more than one level, he told Access.
“As a reader, it’s heartbreaking. It’s really hard to describe, because it never was sort of comfortable for me. It was very hard for me to kind of like detach myself from the impact of what the story means to the watchers of the show if they are allied with Tyrion and Oberyn. If they’re into Oberyn Martell and they’re rooting for Tyrion Lannister, then, of course, it is such brutal, brutal twist at the very, very end of what is a pretty epic battle that, you know, it’s arguable who actually is the winner,” Pedro told Access. “The man is down and it’s just that I insist that he speak the words that I need him to confess. … So it’s just that really gray area of reality, even though this is a show that is based on fantasy.”
“Game of Thrones” continues Sunday night at 9 PM ET/PT on HBO.
