‘Penny Dreadful’: Harry Treadaway On Frankenstein Creating A Love Connection For The Creature

Harry Treadaway’s character, Dr. Victor Frankenstein, has a big task on his hands in “Penny Dreadful” Season 2 – finding The Creature a mate.

Caliban demanded his creator give him an immortal love at the end of the first season of the Showtime series, but while Victor seemed to find a perfect opportunity with the dying Brona Croft, whom he helped speed along her journey to the other side (sorry, Ethan), there are still a few hurdles in the way.

“Victor Frankenstein finds himself in this slightly unenviable position of trying to create a loving partner for his first creation who has put his back against the wall and is threatening to kill him if he doesn’t, so that’s what he’s gotta do, and he finds the perfect vessel in Brona,” Harry told Access Hollywood. “It’s the third time he’s created life and so his methods have advanced and his understanding of the process is deeper and more competent. So there’s a development in the actual process of resurrection.”

But finding the “vessel” was the easy part. Now comes “the turmoil with having to introduce these two,” Harry said.

“He’s realized that life without love isn’t actually much of a life, so he’s realized he’s got to create a way for his first creation to find love in the world, and so he creates a female and has to teach her the ways of the world,” Harry said.

Finding love for one meant taking love away from another. How the Brona situation will affect her lover, Ethan, remains to be seen.

“If he finds out about it, it’s not going to go down well,” Harry told Access.

While heading into Season 2, things don’t look bright for Victor, Harry hinted that darkness is not the only thing ahead for his character.

“It gets so much darker and there is light for the characters as well,” he said. “For Victor there is — he finds happiness and joy in ways that he hasn’t before but he’s also under more pressure and the stakes are higher and there’s more fear and anxiety than he’s experienced before, so it’s sort of stretched – he’s stretched in both ways. And I think this year, as a group unit, as a kind of group — Sir Malcolm and Vanessa and Ethan… now they find themselves more kind of under threat from a sort of dark occult force that’s sort of coming after them more. So they find themselves more preyed upon.”

“Penny Dreadful” returns Sunday night at 10 PM ET/PT on Showtime.
