Pharrell Williams: My Oscar Nomination Left Me ‘Catatonic’

Pharrell Williams had huge night at Sunday’s Grammy Awards, taking home four awards, and with the Oscars approaching and a nomination under his belt (or Vivienne Westwood meme-inspiring hat), the award season love could just be beginning for the musician.

Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson spoke to the 40-year-old on the Grammys red carpet about his recent Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for “Happy” from “Despicable Me 2.”

“I said thank you first and then I was like, no offense to anyone, but I was kind of like catatonic for like 20 minutes,” the singer-songwriter, rapper, producer explained.

Pharrell said the fans are the most important part of making music.

“The thing is it’s not my doing. You know, I did the song… And when you look at all the views and you look at all the purchases and the shares and the requests, those are the people,” he continued.

Adding, “That’s how you quantify success, is by what the people put into it. And so the people did these things for me so… I’m very thankful. I’m humbled by it.”

Pharrell’s “ Happy” is up against “Alone Yet Not Alone” from “Alone Yet Not Alone,” by Bruce Broughton and Dennis Spiegel; “Let It Go” from “Frozen,” by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez; “The Moon Song” from “Her,” by Karen O and Spike Jonze; “Ordinary Love” from “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,” by Paul Hewson, Dave Evans, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen.

Find out if Pharrell will take home Oscar gold at the 86th Annual Academy Awards, with host Ellen DeGeneres, on March 2 live on ABC at 7 PM ET/4 PM PT.
