‘Pitch Perfect 3’ Underway With Returning Screenwriter

Will it be three times the charm for the Bellas?

Universal has begun development on the third installment of the hit “Pitch Perfect” franchise and initiated talks with series screenwriter Kay Cannon to continue crafting the a capella saga, The Hollywood Reporter announced Wednesday

“Pitch Perfect 2” has already grossed more than $160 million at the domestic box office since its May premiere, eclipsing the 2012 original’s $65 million showing. Despite a three-year gap between the first two films, speedier demand for a trilogy capper seemed inevitable after the sequel’s monstrous success.

Whether the studio can nail down return appearances from star Anna Kendrick and breakout favorite Rebel Wilson could be tricky, considering neither actress is optioned for another follow-up and their characters have (spoiler alert!) graduated. Newcomer Hailee Steinfeld signed on for multiple films, however, potentially helping launch a new generation of Barden University songbirds and “Pitch Perfect” fans.

“Pitch Perfect 2” director Elizabeth Banks has yet to confirm her future behind the camera, but the multi-threat previously told Access Hollywood’s Scott “Movie” Mantz she’s already considering the possibility.

“We’re thinking about it, we’re thinking about it very seriously,” Banks revealed to Access in early June, clarifying that it’s likely too early to make any definitive statements. “Of course, we’re at the very beginning of that process.”

“We would love to spend more time with these characters that everyone’s fallen so hard in love with,” she added.

Sounds like audiences aren’t the only ones hoping for a Fat Amy solo.
