Reese Witherspoon Speaks Out On Arrest: ‘We Know Better’

Reese Witherspoon is speaking out about her April 19 arrest in Atlanta with husband Jim Toth where she was charged with disorderly conduct.

Reese appeared on “Good Moring America” on Thursday, calling the incident, “one of those nights.”

“We went out to a restaurant in Atlanta, and we had one too many glasses of wine,” she explained. “We thought we were fine to drive and we were absolutely not, and we are so sorry and just so embarrassed… We know better and we shouldn’t have done that.”

She said they should have called a cab, but “poor judgment” led them to drive.

“We made a mistake, and it was something that will absolutely never happen again,” she said on “GMA.”

The Oscar winner went on to recount how she treated the police officer.

“I was so disrespectful to him,” the actress said. “I have police officers in my family. I work with police officers every day. I know better. It’s just unacceptable.”

She also revealed that she told the arresting officer a slew of things that were not true.

“I have no idea what I was saying. That night I saw him arresting my husband, and I panicked. I said all kinds of crazy things. I said I was pregnant,” Reese explained. “I’m not pregnant. I said crazy things. I had no idea what I was talking about.”

Reese was also asked how she told her children (Ava, 13; Deacon, 9; and Tennessee, who is seven months old) about the incident.

“I have to say that’s the hardest part about it. Having to tell our kids,” she continued. “And just embarrassed. You have to say when you make a mistake, you have to take responsibility. And we are taking responsibility and doing everything in our power to make it right. You just have to be honest with them. That was definitely the hardest part.”

As for the lesson the actress learned?

“When a police officer tells you to stay in a car, you stay in a car,” she added.
