Rising Star: Kate Nash

Naughty girls who need new anthems about bad boyfriends and make-out sessions need to look no further than plucky London chanteuse Kate Nash, Access Hollywood’s latest Rising Star.

The 20-year-old singer/songwriter lept to fame in her native Britain this past summer, selling out tours across the U.K. thanks to her quirky pop songs full of happy piano riffs and hipster atmospherics.

Earlier this month, the redhead released her debut album stateside, “Made of Bricks,” a meaty look at life as a young British woman coming of age.

“Bricks are strong, just like good relationships are strong, and that’s what bricks signify to me,” Kate said of her album. “I’m a homey kind of girl and I like hanging out on a Sunday and eating mashed potatoes and bricks just say home and family – the things that I can’t live without.”

Though this may be her first album, Nash, who just completed a handful of American tour dates, has been songwriting since she was 13.

Nash said she picked up the guitar thanks to her folks, who gifted her with the instrument after she fell down a flight of stairs and broke her foot.

“People have said that I only started doing music after my accident, but that’s not true,” Nash said. “I did have more time to write and develop my own style. When I could listen back to the songs I was writing and not cringe, I started playing them for my sisters, and it sort of went from there.”

Like Lily Allen, with whom she is a friend, Nash got her first big break on MySpace, where she posted some of her flirty indie pop numbers and attracted plenty of attention.

After getting signed in the U.K., she hooked up with producer Paul Epworth for “Made of Bricks.”

The release went to number 2 in the U..K and Nash became a star. With her album hitting number 36 in the U.S. Billboard charts earlier this week, the states are poised and ready to latch on to this rising star.
