ROLL CALL: Ian McKellen Defends The Hobbit: ‘Just As Exciting As Lord Of The Rings’

Your Daily Dispatch of Celebrity Shenanigans

You Shall Not Criticize My Movie!: “The Hobbit” might have gotten some flak from Middle Earthlings earlier this year when it debuted footage, and now star Ian McKellen – who is reprising his Gandalf role – is defending the upcoming prequel trilogy. “I’ve seen enough of it to know it’s going to be just as exciting as ‘Lord of the Rings,’” the actor told the BBC. “In fact, in some senses it’s more exciting because it’s in three dimensions. It’s not the sort of crude 3-D that comes out of the screen. Rather it brings you into Middle Earth. You see round the corners. You see everything.” “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” – coming to theaters in 48 frames per second, compared to the standard of 24 frames – hits theaters on December 14, 2012.

Armie & Johnny’s Bromance: It appears Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp got to be quite the BFFs during the filming of “The Lone Ranger.” “I braided his hair!” Armie told E! Online last night, when asked about bonding with his co-star on the set of their upcoming movie. “That was so nice. We would stay up talking till the sunrise. It was the most magical experience.” We’re pretty sure Armie was joking, but we’re hoping he wasn’t.
