Russell Brand On Upcoming Comedy Series: ‘There Will Be An Inevitable Biographical Element’

Russell Brand is heading to late night television on FX in an unscripted comedy series, tentatively titled, “Strangely Uplifting,” offering the British comedian’s take on politics, pop culture and anything he wants to talk about.

“I think there will be an inevitable biographical element because you can’t speak from anyone’s perspective, but your own” he told critics on Sunday during the FX portion of the Television Critics Association Winter Session 2012 in Pasadena, Calif., in response to a question from AccessHollywood.com.

“I will speak from my own perspective,” he continued. “What this show is, right, is I’m in this extraordinary country of yours, I’m not from here, am I? So, it’s like the perspective of an alien trying to understand this peculiar time, this peculiar country. What I think it’s a bit like, remember Mork? Him.”

The actor, who recently made headlines over his split with pop star Katy Perry, said when the show hits the air – in a six episode format this coming spring (a date has yet to be announced), explained he may discuss his own life – if he’s newsworthy in a more meaningful way at that present moment.

“I think what this show is, both in in presentational style… and in terms of the content is about authenticity. We live in a time where we’re stupefied by plasticity, where we have this toxic, sequined wave of vapid culture, polluting our minds, denigrating our consciousness, detracting us, removing us from our spirituality, so gossip based stories would have less value other than in an analytical context,” Russell said. “I don’t want to further celebrate the overly elaborate brittle, plastic structures of nonsense that are constantly fired into our minds to distract us from what’s actually important.

“If I’d done something actually newsworthy, in some bizarre quirk, then I’d cover it, but if it was more lacquered nonsense designed to distract us from truth, then I’d wisely ignore it,” he added.

Russell confirmed the show may feature guest appearances and he told Access after the panel he is open to doing more than the initial run of six episodes allow, if the fate’s allow.

“I believe in the intention of higher things so I will just be carried by what happens,” he said. “If there are more episodes, that will beautiful. If it goes really well, then that means it’s my duty, my dharma and I’m happy to fulfill my dharma.”
