Russell Brand’s checkered past came back to haunt him on Saturday as he attempted to enjoy a visit to Japan with his pop star wife, Katy Perry.
“So…my husband just got deported from Japan. I am so sad,” Katy Tweeted early Sunday morning. “I brought him all this way to show him my favorite place #tokyodreamscrushed.”
The singer, who wed Russell in October 2010, later revealed the reason for the security snafu, writing, “It was for priors from over 10 years ago! #mamanothappy! #don’tmessw/mahman!”
Ever the comedian, Russell made light of the sticky situation, Tweeting, “Planning escape from Japanese custody. It’s bloody hard to dig a tunnel with a chopstick.
“Stockholm syndrome kicking in,” he added. “Just asked my guard out for (vegetarian) sushi. He giggled.”
Katy attempted to make the best of it, Tweeting, “…But of COURSE I ♥ my Japanese fans & the show #MUSTGOON no matter the daily aftershocks or husband kidnappings! #it’snotrightbutit’sokay.”
As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Russell has openly discussed his past struggles with drug use, sex addiction and encounters with prostitutes – the details of which are sordidly outlined in his 2007 tell-all memoir, “My Booky Wook.”
The “Arthur” star also ran into trouble in September when a paparazzo placed him under citizen’s arrest at Los Angeles International Airport after an alleged altercation.
Katy, Russell’s then-fiancee, took to Twitter at the time to defend her man, writing, “If you cross the line & try an put a lens up my dress, my fiancé will do his job & protect me.”
The incident was captured on video while he and Katy were swarmed by paparazzi as they entered a Delta Air Lines terminal.
On the video, Russell is seen swatting at a photographer and hitting his camera. Charges were not filed against the actor.
