Scandal: Darby Stanchfield Says Abby & David’s Romance ‘Isn’t Going Away’

Abby Whelan will continue to get a bit of finger-biting lovin’ from David Rosen on “Scandal,” according to series star Darby Stanchfield.

The actress, who plays OLA’s no-nonsense Gladiator on the ABC drama, stopped by Access Hollywood Live on Thursday, where she dished on Abby’s Season 3 love life.

“Yes, yes — that relationship isn’t going away,” Darby told Kit Hoover and Billy Bush, when asked if fans will see more of David [played by Josh Malina] and Abby together in coming episodes. “[‘Scandal’ creator] Shonda [Rhimes] and the writers are letting these characters explore trying to be normal with each other.

“I mean, Abby and David have never gone out on an official date,” she continued. “They’ve never had a normal date, and they actually try to this season!”

In a steamy scene during last season’s midseason finale, David found Abby waiting for him at his home and, after a bit of slapping and angst, she shoved her fingers into his mouth. While Darby was happy the shocking moment made waves with fans, she said the scene wasn’t all that easy on her hand.

“He’s got sharp teeth, by the way!” she said of her co-star, laughing. “When I put my fingers in his mouth, he really clamped down!

“He’s got issues,” she jokingly added.

As for their Season 3 romance, Darby said (in true “twisty” “Scandal” fashion) that the pair’s attempt at having a “normal” adult dating relationship will be extremely complicated.

“Abby’s too broken and no one has the time,” Darby said, when asked if Abby and David’s “normal date” will be successful. “But Abby and all of the Gladiators are broken, dysfunctional people. And that’s why it’s so interesting!”

Like Katie Lowes’ Quinn Perkins, Abby will be experiencing a fashion rebirth of sorts during Season 3, slowly beginning to experiment with more daring looks, and Darby said her character’s coming wardrobe evolution signifies more than just sexier clothes.

“Abby wants out,” she said. “[The new look] also reflects what’s going on inside for Abby.”

“Scandal” airs Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC.
