Scandal’s Dan Bucatinsky On His Emmy Win: ‘I Had to Pinch Myself!’

TV’s most buzzed about drama, “Scandal,” now has its very first Emmy winner among the cast. Dan Bucatinsky, who plays journalist James Novack in the show, took home the award this past weekend at the Creative Arts Emmys for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.

Dan beat out Michael J. Fox for “The Good Wife,” Nathan Lane for “The Good Wife,” Harry Hamlin for “Mad Men,” Robert Morse for “Mad Men” and Rupert Friend for “Homeland.”

At a cocktail reception on Tuesday, thrown by the Television Academy and SAG-AFTRA, honoring Emmy nominees who embody diversity, Dan admitted to Access Hollywood that his weekend win left him in shock.

“It was a magical night. I had to pinch myself and I still am. I look at the statue and I wonder whose is that,” he said. “It really is something I feel like I can share with the rest of the cast. It feels like we all can celebrate something that is about the groundswell of support about the show and I’m hoping that it’s a historical night for Kerry [Washington] as well on Sunday.”

“Scandal” fans were livid when they found out Jeff Perry, who plays Dan’s TV husband on the show, didn’t receive a nomination for his intense role as White House chief of staff Cyrus Beene. Dan told Access his co-star helped him win.

“I owe this award and my nomination and share it with Jeff Perry,” Dan told Access. “He has made me a better actor. Every single scene with him is like a master class. I just feel lucky. I honestly feel lucky. It would not have happened without him.”

And Jeff had nothing but love for his TV hubby when he heard he had won the Emmy over the weekend, Tweeting – “DANNY WON !!! SCANDAL’S FIRST EVER EMMY to DAN BUCATINSKY for BEST GUEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA! I DECLARE A NATIONAL JAMES HOLIDAY!!!! XOXO CYRUS”

This is Dan’s first Emmy. He was previously nominated for executive producing “Who Do You Think You Are?” and “Web Therapy.” He is also a co-executive producer and writer on “Grey’s Anatomy.”

“I moved to Los Angeles to be an actor. It has been a very long road for me,” he said. “I have taken many detours into writing and producing, all of which are very satisfying, but my first love was acting and this feels like a very long dream of mine and [Jeff] was very happy for me.”
