Selena Gomez Talks VMAs Surprise Win & Her Unexpected Getaway Role

Selena Gomez admitted that she didn’t expect to pick up a moonman for Best Pop Video at Sunday’s MTV Video music Awards.

“I really didn’t think I was going to win,” she told Access Hollywood on Monday night at the premiere of her new film, “Getaway,” in Los Angeles.

“It was so funny, I was sitting next to Taylor [Swift] and she was grabbing my hand, and I was like, ‘It’s OK. I don’t think I’m going to win.’ And I sat there and I’m watching the One Direction boys looking all pretty, and they said my name and I was like ‘OK, this is great!’” Selena continued. “It’s such a great plus because I’ve really worked hard on this record. It’s great when people focus on the things that they need to focus on. So it was good.”

Selena said it was fun to enjoy the VMAs next to one of her best pals.

“Honestly, every award show that I go to, they know if Taylor is coming I need to sit with her because she’s like my gal pal and it’s good to like have my best friend with me,” she said.

But Selena wasn’t aware that when the cameras panned to the audience at one point, the cameras appeared to catch a curse word coming out of Taylor’s mouth (no audio was captured).

“Which one? I don’t even know,” Selena said.

In “Getaway,” which hits theaters on August 30, Selena plays a young woman whose life is interrupted when former race car driver Brent Magna (Ethan Hawke) jumps in and takes over her vehicle as he rushes to save his kidnapped wife.

“It was fun because a lot of people don’t really expect me to take the roles that I’m taking,” Selena said. “They want it to be a little bit more commercial and so I’m excited that I get to take on movies that people don’t expect me to be in. So, this was great. Ethan and Jon [Voight] were such a pleasure to work with and it was different, so it was good for me as an artist, as an actress.”
