Seth Rogen Clarifies Controversial ‘American Sniper’ Comments

Seth Rogen faced backlash for his Tweets regarding Oscar nominated film “American Sniper,” and now he’s clarifying his controversial remarks.

“It appears I need to further clarify a tweet I send a few days ago; I said a sniper movie kind of reminded me of a scene in another movie that involved a sniper movie. I didn’t compare the two at all,” Rogen wrote in a Tweet on Thursday. “I merely said that one kind of reminded me of the other, because they both involved plots about the most lethal of snipers.

“People then claimed that I compared the movie ‘American Sniper’ to Nazi propaganda, something I would NEVER do, (I’ve already publicly explained that I enjoyed ‘American Sniper’) and also implied that I somehow have something against Chris Kyle and veterans in general, neither of which are true in the least. My grandfather was a veteran. My comment about the movie was not meant to have any political implications. Any political meaning was ascribed to my comment by news commentary. I’m sorry if this somehow offended anyone, but that was not my intention. I hope this clears things up,” he explained further.

Rogen’s initial post on January 18 sparked outrage when he Tweeted, “‘American Sniper’ kind of reminds me of the movie that’s showing in the third act of ‘Inglorious Basterds.'” (Nazi propaganda film titled “Stolz der Nation” – meaning “Nation’s Pride” – is the film shown in the movie “Inglorious Basterds.”)

The following day (Jan. 19), he took to Twitter again to elaborate on his previous comments.

“I just said something ‘kinda reminded’ me of something else. I actually liked ‘American Sniper.’ It just reminded me of the Tarantino scene. I wasn’t comparing the two. Big difference between comparing and reminding. Apples remind me of oranges. Can’t compare them, though,” he wrote, at the time.

Actor Dean Cain – who was paired with Chris Kyle on 2012’s “Stars Earn Stripes” on NBC – was angered by the film star’s first Tweet.

“Seth…I like your films, but right now, I wanna kick your ass. Chris is an American Hero. Period. Go to war. Then we’ll talk,” Cain Tweeted in reaction.

Cain then paid a visit to Access Hollywood Live to defend his view on the matter and the legacy of his late friend Chris.

“I like Seth’s films, but Chris Kyle fought for his right to be able to say those things,” Cain told Access on Wednesday. “It’s a hard thing. It’s like when someone insults a family member. And so my first reaction was anger. I really was ticked off.”

Cain hasn’t been in direct contact with Rogen or Michael Moore – who also Tweeted his own controversial opinion on snipers.

“No I haven’t heard from them. I don’t expect to hear from them,” Dean said.
