Sherman Hemsley: Star Of The Jeffersons Dead At 74

TV actor Sherman Hemsley – best known for his iconic role as George Jefferson in “The Jeffersons” and “All In The Family” – has died, according to reports.

Both People and TMZ have reported his death.

Hemsley was 74.

According to reports, Hemsley died at his home in El Paso, Texas. TMZ reported he was found by his nurse who first thought the actor was sleeping.

No further details on his death were immediately available.

In addition to his role as George Jefferson, Hemsley was also widely recognized for his role as Deacon Ernest Frye in the NBC series “Amen,” which ran from 1986 – 1991.

His later credits included roles on TBS’ “House of Payne,” as well as “Sister, Sister” and a voice role as himself on FOX’s “Family Guy.”

Hemsley was not married and had no children.
