Shonda Rhimes Electrified By Cicely Tyson’s ‘HTGAWM’ Guest Spot

The first season of “How To Get Away With Murder” is slaying it with top-notch guest stars.

Marcia Gay Harden just wrapped an arc and this upcoming Thursday, Cicely Tyson will make her debut as Annalise Keating’s (Viola Davis) mom.

“It was really an honor to have [Cicely] on set and she was incredible and the work was incredible,” Executive Producer Shonda Rhimes told Access Hollywood on Saturday night at the Writers Guild Awards in Los Angeles. “I mean, she and Viola together are electric. It was probably some of my most favorite things I’ve ever seen.”

“HTGAWM” won big at the NAACP Image Awards on February 6, netting Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series (Viola) and Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series (Erika Green Swafford).

On Saturday, Shonda told Access what it feels like for the freshman series (created by Peter Nowalk, who is also the showrunner) to receive such acknowledgement.

“I’m always happy when we’re winning awards for anything, but yeah, it was wonderful to see that show get recognition,” she said. “It’s fresh out of the gate and it was great.”

Shonda once again walked away a winner on Saturday, this time at the WGA Awards. She was presented with the Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Achievement.

“It’s really overwhelming,” she told Access of the honor. “I mean, first of all, Paddy Chayefsky was such a big name in television writing and everything that he accomplished and everything that he did. So, for me it feels really kind of amazing that I would even be getting this award when you look at the names of people who have received it in the past. I sort of was like, ‘Why are they calling me? I feel a little freaked out.’ But, it’s wonderful to know that they’re thinking of me in this way.”

Some notable previous winners of this award include Larry David and Garry Marshall.
