Sleepy Hollow EP Len Wiseman On Season 1 Finale: ‘Nobody Is Safe!’

“Sleepy Hollow” ends what has been a thrilling first season of watching Tom Mison’s Ichabod Crane and Nicole Beharie’s Lt. Abbie Mills battle demons, a headless horseman, and various other supernatural creatures in order to keep the apocalypse at bay.

And, Executive Producer Len Wiseman, has promised not just big twists and big surprises in Monday night’s Season 1 finale on Fox.

As things stood in at the end of the Season 1 penultimate episode, Ichabod and Abbie had discovered a message George Washington had written in his Bible – one that was dated after his death. And, the trailer for the finale seemed to hint that America’s first president is about to come back to life.

When AccessHollywood.com spoke with Wiseman at Fox’s Television Critics Association post-session soiree, he shared some intriguing details about what is heading to “Sleepy Hollow.” And, he revealed some unique facts about the roles of Ichabod and Abbie that just might surprise you.

AccessHollywood.com: Is George coming back?

Len Wiseman: Well, one of the things we found, actually, when we were doing the pilot early on… we found out this fact that he was buried at Mt. Vernon and then, I think it was about… either three weeks or three months later, his gravesite was moved about 30 yards to a different location and [Washington was] buried again. So there’s reports of these different times that he was buried, which, of course, just with our conspiracy theory and everything that works within our mythology, something evil is happening there.

Access: So could George Washington be involved in the [final Season 1] storyline?

Wiseman: George could be involved in the Mason storyline in a way that perhaps George Washington didn’t actually die when he said he did because he needed to send one more warning to the Masons, to the overall war.

Access: How safe are our heroes in the season finale, including the one with the neck issue [Andy, played by John Cho]?

Wiseman: Everybody is on a very precarious position with the episode. It’s one of the things that I really enjoyed about [the show]. From the get-go, you never know who’s gonna die, who’s gonna turn bad, and the finale has a lot of that. I’m actually very proud to say it has twists and turns that I don’t think people are really going to be suspecting, which is always what you try to get out of the story. But, it’s a lot fun and nobody is safe.

Access: Will you leave us with a huge cliffhanger, where we will have to wait until the fall to find out what’s next?

Wiseman: We very annoyingly leave you on an immense cliffhanger, a terrifying cliffhanger that you’ll just have to wait and see. But imagine if we didn’t. That would be terrible.

Access: How happy are you that you found Tom and Nicole for Ichabod and Abbie? They are wonderful.

Wiseman: Aren’t they fantastic? They have such a great mix in terms of how much they respect each other, but also are kind of annoyed by each other. … We love writing for them.

Access: Do you feel lucky that you have them on this show and they’re not out there doing films right now?

Wiseman: God, yes. Absolutely, and I think we really scored. … The part changed quite a bit during the process. Abbie was never written as an African-American and Crane was never written as a British Crane. … It’s been such a gift really with the two of them, they work really well together and we couldn’t ask for more.

“Sleepy Hollow’s” Season 1 finale begins tonight at 8/7c on Fox.
