Southland Canceled By TNT

“Southland” has reached its end of watch.

The police drama has been canceled by TNT, the network announced on Friday.

“TNT has made the difficult decision not to renew ‘Southland’ for another season,” a TNT spokesperson said in a statement. “We are enormously proud of ‘Southland,’ which stands as one of the best police dramas ever made. Executive producers John Wells, Chris Chulack and Jonathan Lisco, along with creator Ann Biderman and our partners at Warner Bros. Television, have given us five seasons of powerful, unforgettable storytelling, for which we are deeply grateful.

“We also want to thank the amazing cast for their impassioned, no-holds-barred performances, and the production team for their tenacity shooting on the streets of real-world Los Angeles,” the statement continued. “We wish everyone associated with ‘Southland’ the very best.”

The Season 5 finale was a cliffhanger on multiple fronts, leaving fans wondering if series star Michael Cudlitz (who played LAPD officer John Cooper) was dead or alive. At the end of the finale, Cooper’s body was riddled with bullets after he attempted suicide-by-cop following an alternation with a neighbor, after the violent, traumatic death of his partner at the hands of drug-addled kidnappers.

Also up in the air was the fate of Officer Ben Sherman (Ben McKenzie) and former Detective Sammy Bryant (Shawn Hatosy) who got in a fistfight after Bryant realized the break-in at his house was not gang-related, but instead orchestrated by Sherman in order to find and destroy an incriminating videotape.

Additionally, Det. Lydia Adams’ (played by Regina King) friendship with former partner Det. Russell Clarke (Tom Everett Scott) seemed to be on the verge of a romantic turn at the end of the Season 5 finale.

Despite the cancelation, there may still be hope for a bit of storyline resolution.

According to a Tweet from TV Guide’s Michael Schneider, TNT, Warner Bros. and “Southland” showrunner John Wells are “kicking around the possibility of doing a 2-hour wrap-up ‘Southland’ movie.”

“Southland” began its five-season run on NBC, before moving to TNT prior to its second season.
