‘Star Wars’ Newcomer John Boyega Calls Robert Downey Jr. His ‘Mentor’

The newest “Star Wars” Stormtrooper says Iron Man’s Robert Downey Jr. is helping him adjust to life in the spotlight.

John Boyega is bracing for the media blitz surrounding his breakout role in December’s highly anticipated sequel “The Force Awakens,” and the actor told Access Hollywood on Thursday that he’s been getting advice on fame from a very reliable source.

“There’s no way to ‘handle’ it, but I’ve been talking to my mentor, Robert Downey Jr.,” John revealed on the red carpet for the HFPA Grants Banquet in Los Angeles. “He’s been very good at advising me about what’s to come and what might come.”

The Brit is already taking the hype in stride, using Robert’s trademark sense of humor to field questions about the upcoming blockbuster.

“I don’t understand why people are asking me about ‘Star Wars’,” the 23-year-old joked to Access. “Honestly, it’s only an indie.”

The actors have clearly bonded over more than just their characters’ iconic armor. John said he’s also learned the importance of maintaining a strong support system as he prepares for his career to potentially skyrocket.

“The most important thing is that it’s a new experience, and I’m going to make sure I have my family and friends around me,” he said.

Although John can now include the beloved sci-fi franchise on his resume, the actor said his excitement for “Episode VII” most resembles that of a typical fan.

“I just literally can’t wait for the film to come out. I want to watch it,” he told Access. “That’s my main fixation right now. I just want to watch the movie.”

Many can likely relate to John’s enthusiasm, but the actor let slip a fun tidbit that even the most die-hard “Star Wars” experts might find adorably incriminating.

“Yes, I’m sure there will be a picture of me at 8 or 9 years old wearing a Chewbacca jammie set,” he admitted. “Let’s not comment on that now, but that might surface soon enough.”

“Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Force Awakens” flies into theaters on Dec. 18.
