Stars React To Their Grammy Nominations

Mary J. Blige is the new queen of the Grammy nominations. Blige tops the list with eight nominations, including record of the year for “Be Without You.” Blige says her music of the past was about her being a victim, but now it’s about her loving herself. She says her music has changed and the fans recognize that because she’s much happier than in the past. She found out about her nominations on her third wedding anniversary, and she says this year has been the best year of her life.

Justin Timberlake is not taking the Grammys lightly. His “FutureSex/LoveSounds” album is up for album of the year, and he’s nominated for three other awards. He says he’s honored to be nominated with such artists as Mary J. Blige. He’s not worried about Blige as competition for album of the year, because he looks up to her and he considers the Grammys “a special thing.” He says the Grammys are nice because they’re voted on by his peers. Timberlake already has two Grammys, but none in a major category.

Corinne Bailey Rae says don’t think for a second just because she’s English she doesn’t care about an American award like the Grammys. Rae says “it’s the biggest music award in the world” and it’s something as an English person she would never dream of winning. Rae is up for best new artist, plus “Put Your Records On” is the surprise nominee for record of the year.

Her competition for best new artist includes Chris Brown, who says he’s proud of being part of the new generation of musicians.

James Blunt says being nominated multiple times, including for best new artist, was “a real surprise.” Carrie Underwood is also up for the award, as is Imogen Heap, a British singer along the lines of PJ Harvey. Heap’s Web site says it’s “stupidly excited” to announce Heap’s two Grammy nominations, especially since her birthday is tomorrow.

K.T. Tunstall is relieved that she can now be considered an established musician with a Grammy nomination as well. Tunstall is up for the female pop vocal Grammy, competing against Pink, Natasha Bedingfield, Sheryl Crow, and Christina Aguilera. Tunstall says she wrote songs for ten years alone in her bedroom. She says, “You don’t come out feeling like, ‘I’m a writer, I’m a singer, I’m a musician,’ you come out going, ‘I’m unemployed, but I really want something to happen.”’ She says now it’s great to know she’s really a musician.

OK Go’s treadmill video has gotten the attention of the Grammy people. The video for “Here It Goes Again” is nominated for the short-form video Grammy. The reaction from singer Damian Kulashis, “Are you serious? Man, the wonders never cease.” He says the nomination gives him faith that “a good idea can actually trump truckloads of money.” He’s thinking big, though. He says, “Does this mean we get to meet Justin Timberlake again?” OK Go’s competition in that category are videos by Big and Rich, The Killers, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Underoath.

The Grammys will be handed out February eleventh in Los Angeles.
