‘Sucker Punch’ Brings Strong Female-Powered Cast To The Big Screen

Zack Snyder’s latest superhero-driven flick, the female-centric “Sucker Punch,” was previewed last Saturday at Comic-Con, and fans have been going crazy for what they’ve seen so far. The all-star on-screen team includes Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens Jena Malone and Jon Hamm among others.

AccessHollywood.com’s Laura Saltman caught up with Vanessa and Jena just before the film’s first sneak peek to talk weapons and wardrobe.

“[Gun training] is the best,” Vanessa explained to Laura. “It’s the most empowering feeling you can get, especially as a woman — I think it’s so thrilling.”

Zack Snyder, who last directed 2009’s “Watchmen,” attempts to bring a feminine and fanatical burlesque to the big screen in this action packed thriller.

“The wardrobe is just so theatrical in a sense,” Vanessa admits.

“Tasty forms of lingerie meets heavy artillery meets mental institution meets dancer,” Jena Malone explained. “There are a lot of different worlds colliding.”

Fans of the genre have repeatedly compared the film to Synder’s 2006 war-thriller, “300,” saying it’s a female version of that testosterone-fueled flick.

“There are a lot of elements that ‘300’ didn’t have,” Vanessa commented. “But when it comes to the action, I’d say it’s just as badass.”

Vanessa’s beau of 5-years, Zac Efron, agrees that the fans won’t know what hit them!

“She’s kicking mad butt,” Zac told Access (about Vanessa in “Sucker Punch”) last Tuesday at the premiere of his new film, “Charlie St. Cloud.” “It’s insane. [Vanessa] has a scene with a tomahawk. It’s all her doing the action.”

The starlets of Snyder’s new film trained for three months prior to the start to the filming and for five months while continuing shooting.

“We’d wake up in the morning, do martial arts, learn our fighting choreograph and then take a break where they’d feed us protein shakes,” Vanessa explains to Laura. “I would pass out and [Jena] would ice herself. We’d try and do nothing. Then we’d train with navy seals for about an hour and a half and then [on] Tuesdays and Thursdays we’d have gun training afterwards.”

“Sucker Punch” is scheduled to hit theaters on March 25, 2011.
