‘Supernatural’: Misha Collins On Castiel’s Trip With Metatron, Dean’s Worsening Condition

With some of his grace still out there and Metatron claiming to know where it is, Misha Collins’ Castiel is hitting the road in this week’s episode of “Supernatural.”

So how much time did Misha and Curtis Armstrong, who plays Metatron, have to spend in the car for the Castiel/Metatron roadtrip in Wednesday’s episode, “Book of the Damned”?

“I’m glad that you put it in those terms — ‘have to spend’ — because it felt like that from my character’s standpoint,” Misha told Access Hollywood. “It was not pleasant to be cooped up in the car with Metatron and all of his waxing poetic.”

In the last episode, Castiel stripped Curtis’ Metatron of grace, rendering him mortal. Sam then shot him in the leg as they worked to get information out of him (like how he was lying about knowing how to get rid of The Mark of Cain). Now that Metatron is mortal, expect Curtis’ character to face more physical pain (Cas punched him in the trailer).

“There is a little bit. I think it’s kind of ironic, but Metatron’s introduction to humanity, basically the moment he is a human, he is shot in the leg, which is not the greatest human sensation, so he is experiencing kind of the underbelly of humanity right from the get-go,” Misha said. “And yet, in spite of that, he is so overwhelmed by his senses that he is kind of elated by the whole experience as well, which makes him into even more of a chatterbox than usual, which makes Cas hate him even more than usual. So it’s a spiral of despair as far as Castiel is concerned. But he is definitely manhandling Metatron and not terribly sensitive to his human needs.”

Metatron claimed to know where some of Castiel’s grace is and Misha said there will be developments in that storyline.

“We will get something out of Metatron in that department, but there will be some tremendous bad that comes with the good, let’s put it that way,” he said.

Wednesday night’s episode won’t just find Cas dealing with a mouthy Metatron. He’s about to meet Felicia Day’s Charlie.

“Cas and Charlie are going to be cooperating on a project together,” Misha said. “They are fast friends and easy allies for sure.”

Overshadowing everything, though, is The Mark of Cain, and the hold it has on Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) — a hold that is tightening. So Access had to ask Misha how much worse things can get.

“It feels to me like a little bit of an addiction storyline, like where Dean is in denial about the effects of the Mark himself, and he’s hiding — attempting to hide — the effects of the Mark from Sam and from Cas, and yet it is sucking him [in] and it is definitely taking over him more and more,” Misha said. “We know where he can wind up from this. I mean, it can turn him into a demon, and we know that we are sliding toward that precipice, and it’s kind of a time bomb. We have to find a way to remove the Mark or else we will lose him and he is not going to cooperate in his own salvation. … He’s trying to convince himself or others, that he’s going to be able to handle it, that he’s gonna be OK, but he’s not.”

Outside of his work as a series regular on “Supernatural,” Misha is currently ramping up his efforts for GISHWHES (the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen), which is currently in the registration stage. The actor is hoping to use funds from this year’s scavenger hunt (teams of 15 compete in challenges for a major prize) to help build a school in Nicaragua through his Random Acts charity.

But does being a part of a show like “Supernatural,” which is constantly raising the stakes, put pressure on Misha as he plans this year’s GISHWHES?

“I actually think that there is kind of a parallel in the ‘Supernatural’ universe. … One of the things is that in ‘Supernatural,’ they keep running up against a ceiling. They keep meeting this challenge of, ‘OK, we just dealt with the apocalypse, now what’s the next biggest thing?’ And they keep rising to the occasion somehow,” Misha said, noting that with GISHWHES they do indeed face similar challenges..

For Misha, though, that challenge is find out what the next step is beyond winning more Guinness World Records, which GISHWHES has already done again and again.

“We have to find something cooler to top that with, like, ‘What are we gonna do? What’s our next thing?’ So we’re trying to figure that out,” he said.

“I don’t know what that is, to be honest with you, right now, but it’s gonna happen,” he said.

“Speaking of the tie between [the] ‘Supernatural’ fandom and GISHWHES, GISHWHES wouldn’t have happened were it not for the ‘Supernatural’ fandom, and the reason is, this is such an enthusiastic fan base and they’re so game. They’re actually creatively invested in the show in a way that I think is incredibly unusual and it enables us, the actors on the show, to interact with the fans in a really creative and engaging way. Like… you know what guys? Let’s go break a Guinness World Record together and they’ll do it and for me… that’s been a very, very cool aspect of this job and a really exciting thing about GISHWHES has been that it started with ‘Supernatural’ fans and now it’s totally spread beyond the fandom.”

Misha’s scavenger hunt even has celebrities who take part, including “SPN” watcher and sci-fi legend, William Shatner.

“It’s kind of fun having The Captain trying to win GISHWHES. It’s kind of surreal,” he said.

“Supernatural” continues Wednesday at 9/8c on The CW.
