Thandie Newton Sounds Off On ‘Happyness’ Role

Thandie Newton doesn’t think her character in “The Pursuit of Happyness” is a bad mother because she left her husband and child.

Newton says she doesn’t judge people. She knows life is tough and can be painful. She says she “really, really felt for” her character.

She says if you have a problem with her character in “Happyness,” it might be because you have a problem, yourself.

She says there are a lot of people who look at her character in the movie starring Will Smith and “judge her harshly.” She says those who do are “bringing something to the party” because they have their own personal axes to grind.

After looking at the role of Chris Gardner’s wife, she was able to feel her pain. Newton says it’s wrong for anyone to judge her because as a mother of two kids herself, she can imagine that leaving your child would be “a slow suicide.”

She says she feels there should have been a separate movie just about Mrs. Gardner.

“The Pursuit of Happyness” was the top movie at the box office this past week.
