‘The Biggest Loser’ Trainers’ New Year’s Resolution Tips

If your New Year’s resolution focuses on fitness and weight loss, the folks at “The Biggest Loser” are here to help!

Access Hollywood recently caught up with “The Biggest Loser” trainers and host Alison Sweeney and asked them how to stay committed to New Year’s resolutions.

Alison took a practical approach to make incremental progress over the course of the entire year.

“Set realistic goals for yourself and give yourself goals that you can achieve in the short term as well as the long term,” she advised. “People make New Year’s resolutions that are kind of vague and crazy and maybe far reaching. It’s really hard to stay focused and it’s important to give yourself like this week I’m going to do X, next week I’m going to do Y. You really just want to set goals for yourself you can achieve and that confidence you get from meeting that goal or that deadline will help you do it again.”

Trainer Jennifer Widerstrom further elaborated that it’s most rational to take baby steps towards your overall goal, rather than focusing solely on the big picture.

“I always say start small. Start the little victories. It’s starting your day with a glass of water and doing it every day,” she told Access. “I’m going to work out one week day one weekend day. Start there. Add. You can always add…Start small and build.”

While many people wave the white flag and surrender resolutions before January is even over, trainer Bob Harper shared suggestions for creating manageable resolutions you won’t quit early.

“I think that when it comes to New Year’s resolutions you have to be really careful not to make too many changes because that’s what so many people want to do. It’s like they come off the holidays and they’re like I’m gonna just like go to the gym every day and I’m going to eat perfectly. By January 10, you’re like screw this and so it’s like you give yourself one goal, give yourself one challenge for the month,” he recommended.

He also came up with the concept of committing to monthly resolutions rather than yearly.

“February you’re more likely to try to do some more,” he continued. “Every single month try to challenge myself. This January for me it’s going to be absolutely no sugar and that’s going to be a very hard challenge to do, so I tell people if you come off the holidays, you’ve been drinking a little bit more than you should have, make January sober January. It can be anything.”

Trainer Dolvett Quince came equipped with information on how to change your thought process when it comes to regular exercise.

“Don’t look at working out as something you have to do. Look at it as something you want to do and it’s your mindset,” he said. “If your mind is in a place of I’m going to do something for me today, doing something for you means your vessel, your body, your mind, your sanity. Then you’ll be fine.”

Dolvett continued his pep talk, saying everyone deserves to give themselves a second chance, just like “The Biggest Loser” contestants at Comeback Canyon this season.

“You never graduate from taking care of yourself,” he asserted.

Perhaps the best way to stay with a resolution that lasts from the beginning to end of 2015 is to create one you’re really passionate about.

“Get excited about what your goal is, but realize that once you get there, there is another one you have to create,” trainer Jessie Pavelka told Access. “Look at that, get excited, but remember there is stuff that has to happen in between, so if you want to lose 100 pounds for 2015, or let’s say 60 pounds for 2015, what are those small changes you can make every day?

“A lot of people look at their goal and it becomes this massive thing that’s much bigger than them and it becomes daunting and overwhelming. Look at the small changes you can make. That’s key because those are the things that can get you there. “
