‘The Flash’ EP Andrew Kreisberg On Mid-Season Finale: Reverse Flash & Firestorm!

“The Flash” isn’t holding back with its mid-season finale, ushering in The Reverse Flash, the man who changed Barry Allen’s life forever.

Tuesday’s 2014 closer for The CW drama will pit Barry, the S.T.A.R. Labs team and Detective Joe West against the villain, who killed Barry’s mom (and the real man responsible for our hero’s dad being in prison).

But “The Man In The Yellow Suit” episode also brings back Firestorm, played by Robbie Amell, who will encounter Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker), the woman he was set to marry, and who has been grieving him since the particle accelerator explosion all those months ago.

“The Flash” Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg previewed some of the big moments coming up in Tuesday’s episode when he spoke with Access Hollywood — not just ones of intensity, but joy as well. He also dropped a few details about things we can expect in the future.

The Reverse Flash!

“He’s The Flash’s greatest nemesis and we just don’t believe in waiting on that. For us, The Reverse Flash is tied into his origins story,” Kreisberg said about dropping the villain into the center of Episode 9. “He’s responsible for the death of [Barry’s] mother, so having them finally come face to face just felt absolutely right and… hopefully this episode feels as epic as we want it to be.”

Access asked if by the end of the episode fans will know the identity of The Reverse Flash.

“We’re gonna get to know The Reverse Flash more, which is kind of exciting and I think we’ve constructed it in a way that that is going to hopefully exceed people’s expectations. But, there’s a bunch of mysteries that we’ve set up, and the mid-season finales — to me, the most successful ones are the ones that answer a bunch of the questions that people have had since the pilot, but also set up a whole bunch of new mysteries and I think this episode succeeds on that front: You’re gonna get answers, ’cause we just don’t believe in teasing the audience for too long without rewarding their faithfulness, but then also set up some new mysteries and some new dynamics and some new relationships amongst the core characters that people weren’t possibly expecting,” Kreisberg told Access.

Barry’s emotions were affected by Bivolo, the red-eyed meta-human, in the crossover episode, forcing him to fight his pal, The Arrow. But this time around, dealing with the man who killed his mom will also have Barry’s emotions twisted up naturally.

“Yeah, it’s definitely an emotional episode for Barry, and his emotions definitely get the better of him a little bit and Joe [West] and [Harrison] Wells find themselves on the same page again, wondering if Barry is going to be more of a liability in apprehending The Reverse Flash than help and that definitely sets up a lot of the conflict in the episode,” Kreisberg said.

Firestorm Returns

Robbie Amell made a very brief cameo as Firestorm at the end of “The Flash” portion of the crossover and he will cross paths with Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker) in Tuesday’s episode.

“Caitlin is going to discover that Ronnie is still alive, but who and what he is is up for discussion,” Kreisberg said. “It’s an incredibly emotional episode for Danielle. There’s so many crazy, outlandish things happening in this episode, but she makes everything feel so real and she gives such an emotional true performance. Despite the sort of comic book stuff that’s thrown on top of it, you feel everything that Caitlin’s going through and there’s some great emotional stuff between her and Robbie Amell and then also, some of the most exciting visual effects we’ve done involving Firestorm, so this episode really – people say this a lot, but this episode really does have it all.”

Christmas Celebrations!

While there will be plenty of drama, there is also time for a little happiness around a Christmas tree.

“This is a bit of an intense episode, obviously, [with] Barry coming face to face with the man who killed his mother, but we wanted to really balance that and make it feel like an episode of ‘Flash,’ so it really balanced with a lot of bright, fun Christmas cheer. And it’s the kind of thing you can’t quite do on ‘Arrow’ because they just don’t live in that world, but everybody getting together and trimming a Christmas tree and having eggnog and listening to Christmas music — it definitely feels right in the world of ‘The Flash.’

But no singing from former “Glee” alum Grant Gustin just yet.

“He’ll be singing in Episode 12, and trust me, it’ll be worth the wait,” Kreisberg said.

Eddie Thawne

There will be scenes involving Rick Cosnett’s Eddie Thawne in the mid-season finale, but no great exploration into his past just yet.

“There’s a couple of big moments with Eddie in [Tuesday’s] episode that I think people are going to be excited about. And some things we like to slow play and other things we can’t sprint to fast enough, and Eddie has been the beneficiary of both of those… and hopefully we’ll be seeing more of that as the season progresses,” the EP told Access.

Kreisberg said Eddie’s backstory will be explored, “as we move deeper into the season.”

GRODD

Gorilla Grodd is also something that won’t make it into “The Flash” mid-season finale, but they haven’t just planted those seeds for fun.

“Not in this episode, but definitely as we keep going forward, we’ll definitely get to hear and hopefully see more of Grodd,” he said.

“The Flash” mid-season finale airs Tuesday night at 8/7c on The CW.
