‘The Flash’ Q&A: Emily Bett Rickards On How Visiting Barry & Central City Helps Felicity

Grant Gustin as Barry Allen and Emily Bett Rickards as Felicity Smoak in ‘The Flash (The CW)

“Arrow’s” Felicity Smoak is coming to Central City on Tuesday’s episode of “The Flash.”

Emily Bett Rickard’s delightful character will get to have a little fun (a double date!) and fight crime (Wentworth Miller’s debut as Captain Cold!) in the episode. It’ll be a nice change for Felicity, who has had a rough go of things like her fellow Team Arrow members, as they continue to reel from the loss of Sara Lance (Caity Lotz).

Emily spoke with AccessHollywood.com about crossing over to “The Flash,” Felicity’s double date with Barry, Iris and Eddie, and why her character really needs the trip to Central City.

AccessHollywood.com: What’s the biggest difference between working on ‘The Flash’ and ‘Arrow’?
Emily Bett Rickards:
There’s a lot more daylight in Central City, but I feel like Felicity’s role is different. She’s always there to help, but I think the story of The Flash is not her home base, so she’s sort of there to accentuate a little bit and throw a little bit of a different dynamic in there to help, but she’s also — she’s a new additive, so she’s kind of new and fresh in there, which is kind of fun. So she doesn’t get too deep in Central City, but she definitely really fits in there. She’s sort of a light, so it’s nice to be in a light place, [a] lighter place.

Access: Is it kind of the perfect time for her to go considering everything that happened with Sara and Oliver in the last couple of episodes on ‘Arrow’?
Emily:
I think it was sort of a deciding factor. … I think it was sort of a breath of fresh air. Getting on a train or getting to do a drive when you’re thinking too much and a lot of drastic things have happened in your life [is] always important and I think that getting on the train to go to Central City was probably really, really good for her personally. … And then, getting there, and getting to a place where you know people and people you like, I think she did need that.

Access: What does she think of Iris when she meets her?
Emily:
She likes her. She likes her a lot. I think that they get along. … I think that they would be friends if they lived in the same town. Plus, I really like Candice [Patton, who plays Iris]. And Candice and I get along, so we’re sort of like ‘Game on for friendship! More scenes!’

Access: Preview the double date. Iris pushes you guys into it, is that right?
Emily:
Yeah, we’re sort of caught in a limbo. … I think Felicity comes to Central City to sort of like see Barry once or twice and ends up getting to see him a lot more than that and then they end up on a double date and Felicity’s a little awkward and very much overdressed and I think they say yes because there’s no opportunity to say no. But it’s not like it’s the end of the world. It’s not like it’s the worst plan they could’ve done and I think that they both know that and they have a good time.

Access: You just said awkward and overdressed. Isn’t Felicity always overdressed? She has some fabulous clothes on the show.
Emily:
Oh yes, I’m aware. My feet hurt most of the time because of the heels, but I’m working on that. She looks great. Honestly, like the clothes that I get to put on and try on, I mean, right now, I’m in all black and I’m on a beach and this is just so not Felicity. She would never wear this and I don’t own anything as nice as she owns. I don’t know when she goes shopping. She clearly spends all of her money on clothes. We definitely have that in common, but we definitely shop for different things.

Access: We get to meet Wentworth Miller as Captain Cold in this episode. What was it like working with him because everyone keeps raving about him?
Emily:
We got to work together, but we didn’t have a lot of time to chat. It was more like, ‘Hi, um great to meet you. Can’t wait to work [with you],’ and then it was like, ‘See ya!’ So we didn’t really cross paths that often. … He’s a very nice man and I wish I had more time to spend with him to get to know him.

Access: What does this episode of ‘The Flash’ do for Felicity and how she’s feeling and her mindset?
Emily:
I think the space away from Starling City is just a really good point. I think it’s very healthy for her. I strongly believe it is what she needed… to go back refreshed. Sometimes you really need to like hit a restart button, especially with Sara’s death and hopefully S.T.A.R. Labs can help them out with that. I think that she’s making more connections. She’s not going to close herself off and saying yes to things is a big deal for her.

Access: It looks like there is a kiss in the trailer with Barry and Felicity. Is it a real kiss?
Emily:
(laughs) It keeps the door open. That’s all I’m gonna say.

Access: I remember you saying last season that you’d like Felicity to have a love interest because she’s so lonely. Oliver’s not the perfect boyfriend right now. Do you think Ray could be a good guy for her back on ‘Arrow’?
Emily:
I think Ray is a supportive aspect in her life right now and I think that’s possibly what she needs… He definitely is accentuating her in a good way, so we’ll see where that goes.

Access: Will we get to see Felicity date this season on ‘Arrow’?
Emily:
She doesn’t have a whole lot of time, but we definitely have the atmosphere we get from dates we get to see her sort of play with. Whether or not she has the time to go on dates, we get sort of the idea of that.

“The Flash,” featuring Emily Bett Rickards airs Tuesday night at 8/7c on The CW. “Arrow” continues its third season Wednesday nights at 8/7c on The CW.
