‘The Mindy Project’ & ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ Gift War!

Mindy Kaling and her writing staff are deep into work on Season 4 of “The Mindy Project” for Hulu, but on Thursday, the team enjoyed a little break courtesy of another show.

Tina Fey’s “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” writers sent them a choir, and the group performed for Mindy’s team. The musical performance, though, wasn’t the first gift from Tina’s camp.

On her show’s set on Friday, as she promoted “The Mindy Project’s” Season 4 premiere (September 15 on Hulu), Mindy told Access Hollywood that the “gift war” between the writing staffs of the two shows started about “a month ago.” Knowing they had a 26-episode fourth season for “The Mindy Project,” Tina sent over two massage therapists for the writing staff, and a supportive note, Mindy said.

“’30 Rock’ is one of our favorite shows of all time and she knows what the schedule is like to have that many episodes, so that was very nice,” Mindy said of the initial gesture that sparked the “gift war.”

“So we sent back a gift — like we sent them a puppy party and then yesterday we had the SoCal VoCals show up and sing the ‘Kimmy Schmidt’ theme and then our theme. It’s hard to top that, though,” she said.

Ike Barinholtz, Mindy’s co-star and fellow “Mindy Project” writer, said that although the bar has been raised by the East Coast “Kimmy” staff, they’ve got their thinking caps on.

“This is like Mindy and Tina’s dream, I feel like, just to go back and forth with ridiculous gifts,” Ike said. “I don’t know what we’re going to do now. They sent us an a cappella band, so I think we have to send them like the Harlem boys choir or something.”

Or change things up with something edible or drinkable?

“[A] case of ‘Pinot Noir,'” Ike said, making a reference to Titus Burgess’ viral song from “Kimmy.” “The real Pinot Noir. Not the one he’s referring to in the song.”
