‘The Tomorrow People’s’ Luke Mitchell On ‘Endgame’

John Young has some big decision to make on Monday night’s “The Tomorrow People” on The CW.

With The Founder hunting his group of super-abilities humans, Luke Mitchell’s character, John, is being called upon to use the one thing that makes him different from his gang – his ability to kill. Jedekiah wants John to take out The Founder, but can John’s former mentor even be trusted?

Luke previewed Monday’s episode in a new interview with AccessHollywood.com.

AccessHollywood.com: You film in Canada. Has that been an adjustment being Australian and having to deal with the winters that come to a place like Vancouver?

Luke Mitchell: Not too much. I’ve certainly had my moments where I’ve been like, ‘Holy crap, this is cold,’ but because we started in July last year, I acclimatized pretty well. But, earlier this year, we had a cold [spell] and it was [21 F] in the city and we had to shoot a scene outside. To give you an example, [in] Whistler, where there’s the snow village, the village itself in the middle of winter is about [32] degrees, and as you get up the mountains, it might be [14 F] up the top of the mountain, so that’s what you’d expect when it’s snowing. This is [21 F] in the city! It was just crazy.

Access: That works because Stephen can stop time on the show and things are frozen when you’re filming.

Luke: Yes, indeed. … It’s kind of tricky when it is that cold, like you just don’t want to take your hands out of your pockets and it’s just trying to focus on not looking cold. In fact, coincidentally, it’s actually this episode that’s airing on Monday that there’s a John and Jedekiah scene under a bridge and that was the [21] degrees day. I saw the episode last night — I don’t think you can tell it’s that cold, but let me tell you, it was that cold.

Access: We’re talking about the cold and being frozen and the big revelation in last week’s episode was Stephen found Roger’s frozen body. How big of a reveal is that to your side of things?

Luke: It’s pretty huge. It’s pretty huge not only that his body is intact but he’s being kept by Jedekiah. But it brings up a lot of questions. It makes you go, ‘Why? Why is Jedekiah doing this? Is he hoping to conduct experiments? Is he hoping to extract his powers?’ because we had the episode with the twins where you saw how emotional Jedekiah got. You’re like, ‘Wow, those twins – who he didn’t know from a bar of soap — because one of them died, he broke down.’ So that obviously means a lot, this type of experimentation, so it begs the question, what is Jedekiah doing with Roger’s body?

Access: And, the question of who do we trust – Jedekiah vs. Founder.

Luke: If you don’t know who to trust now, you’re going to have your mind blown at the end of Episode 17, because that’s where we push the story. It’s who do you trust? You’re kind of leaning one way throughout the episode and then by the end of it you’re like ‘Holy crap! I think I’ve been duped.’ Me… as the actor reading the episode for the journey, [I was] going, ‘I don’t know who to trust,’ so the audience isn’t going to know who to trust.

Access: In the trailer for Monday’s episode, Jedekiah tells your character John it is his destiny to kill The Founder. It sounds like a suicide mission or sacrificial mission.

Luke: Yeah, it does certainly sound like that. Certainly, if someone were to try and singlehandedly take out The Founder it would seem like a suicide mission and I think there is reference to a suicide mission in this episode. One of the reveals in the episode is the reason Jedekiah engineered John to be able to kill was with the intention of one day killing The Founder, according to Jedekiah, of course, and that’s if you believe it. That’s the beauty of that character, he says a lot of stuff, but there’s some truth and lies all mixed together in a nice neat package. … Jedekiah says he needs Stephen to talk to me because at this point in time there is zero trust between John and Jedekiah. … So it takes a little coaxing to even turn John [on] to the idea of having a conversation, let alone making the decision to try it. So there’s a lot going on there.

Access: Something else going on in the episode is flashback sequences involving new hairdos for some of the older guys on the show. Which one have you liked the most? They are hilarious on Simon and Mark…

Luke: They are hilarious. I kind of like them all. I like the way they style Jedekiah’s hair for the younger days. It makes him look so nerdy, but that’s, of course, just his hair. The wig that they put on Simon is fantastic. It kind of reminds me of an old lady’s hair that you’d see at bingo or something like that. … When you go into the hair and makeup trailer, there’s all these wigs lying around and so the cast generally put them on and take photos, so we’ve got a photo wall in there of different people wearing different wigs and it’s just fantastic.

Access: ‘The Tomorrow People’ is about to premiere in Australia. How excited are you?

Luke: Oh my goodness, so excited! It’s one thing to get on a show over here and that’s terribly exciting, but then, for the show to go back home and for me to say, ‘Hey guys, this is what I’ve been doing. I know I’ve been telling you about it, but you actually [can] now see it for yourself’ — I think that’s the best part about it. I guess it’s a little bit of pride, say, ‘Look, I’ve been working my ass off on this thing and I’ve literally given the show blood, sweat and tears, and this is it, I hope you like it. At least check it out, see what you think.’ So I’m pretty thrilled, although most of my close family have been able to watch it online or whatever, but fans of shows that I’ve done back home will be able to connect the dots now and I’m pretty excited about that.
