The Voice: Matthew Schuler Talks Battle Round ‘A** Whooping’

He got all four coaches chairs to turn within seconds of singing during the blind auditions (the fastest in “The Voice” history) but Philadelphia college student Matthew Schuler wasn’t confident he would come out on top in last night’s battle rounds against teammate Jacob Poole.

“It’s a blessing I get to live to sing another day,” the Team Christina contestant told reporters on Wednesday morning during a conference call. “Jacob tried to beat me up on that stage! He is a powerhouse. I definitely didn’t win by a whole lot.”

Coach Adam Levine told the guys after the performance the intensity felt by the audience and the coaches was “like a musical ass whooping! That was crazy.”

Blake Shelton chimed in with his agreement, “I’m gonna wait for somebody’s nose to start bleeding!”

The young singer thought the whole thing was hilarious.

“It’s so cool to be a part of the humor of the show,” Matthew chuckled. “They make it so entertaining — the coaches. It was really high energy. So I guess Adam and Blake they kind of got beat up by our song!”

Going into the battle rounds, Matthew was considered a frontrunner — something of which he was certainly cognizant going into the performance.

“Seriously, it was definitely a blessing and a curse — all the hype that I have been getting,” he said. “It’s been such a blessing but just knowing I have to live up to it that was, I guess, my biggest concern going into that battle. Jacob, even though it was a one-chair turn, dude is a beast! So it was really important to me to give it my all and work my tail off every single time. You have to work for this. Nothing is given to you. “

The battle rounds continue on “The Voice” next Monday (8 PM ET/PT) and Tuesday (9 PM ET/PT) on NBC.
