The Walking Dead: Is A Softer Side Of Michonne Coming?

“The Walking Dead’s” Michonne has been one of TV’s toughest characters since her debut on the hit AMC zombie series, but actress Danai Gurira says the katana-wielding woman is in for a change.

Danai stopped by Access Hollywood Live on Wednesday, where she told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover that this past Sunday’s episode (where her character bonded with Rick Grimes and his son, Carl, while fighting off zombies, naturally) marked a turning point for her character.

“She can kind of [now] reach back to the chick she was before [who] she had to shut down and become a warrior,” Danai said of Michonne’s upcoming story.

“It’s a really powerful moment for her, she’s combining that warrior chick and the heart and the empathetic place that she used to have before the apocalypse,” the small screen beauty continued. “I think that makes her a pretty powerful chick.”

And it appears that Michonne will become a member of Rick’s group.

“She knows she needs community,” Danai she told Billy and Kit. “[Michonne is now thinking,] ‘I know these are the right people for me.’”

The actress said her character needs to start “connecting heart to heart.”

Danai also shared with Billy and Kit her tips on how to survive a zombie attack.

“Don’t scream, don’t trip,” she said. “If you’re clumsy and loud, you’re not going to make it.”

And though the actress might play one of the show’s most ruthless zombie slayers, Danai was frightened of her the AMC series before she landed her plum role.

“I had never watched the show because I’m an absolute scaredy cat, so I had never gone near it,” she said on Wednesday’s show. “And then I just got sucked in, but I was still scared.”

As she prepped for the role, watching Season 1 at her home, Danai explained that she had to convince herself that a walker would not be able to attack her.

“I just reasoned through it, ‘Zombies can’t climb walls, you’re on the second floor,’” she recalled. “I kind of got through it that way, watching it late at night.”

“The Walking Dead” continues Sunday at 9 PM on AMC.
