‘The Walking Dead’ Recap: Season 5, Episode 6 — ‘Consumed’

Carol and Daryl hit the road, following a lead on Beth Greene in the latest episode of AMC’s “The Walking Dead.”

Their journey took them inside Atlanta’s city walls, where we learned more about Carol and flashbacked to so many pivotal, yet unseen moments for the character – including what happened right after Rick kicked her out of the group and how she got cleaned up after terminating the Termites.

Here’s our recap of “The Walking Dead” Season 5, Episode 6 – “Consumed.”

Carol Gets Kicked Out Of Rick’s Group (Flashback)

Carol & Rick, The Small Housing Community Where They Found Supplies In Season 4: A car starts and “The Walking Dead” has taken us back to the day Carol was kicked out of the group by Rick in Season 4. A short ways down the road, she pulls the station wagon  over and cries, her head resting on the steering wheel. “Go away,” she says with a sob, and then again with a scream, as a walker paws at the car. It won’t go away, so Carol turns the key in the ignition and drives off, finding refuge in The Whalen Law Firm in a nearby town. She sets herself up for the night, but can’t sleep. One morning, perhaps the next day, she is looking out of the building window when she spots smoke in the distance – there’s a fire. On the road she drives past a sign that reads, “Hitchhikers may be escaping inmates.” She’s headed toward the prison.

Carol & Daryl Search For Beth (Present)

Carol & Daryl, On The Road In A Car: As they tail the car with the crosses in the windows (their own vehicle lights are out so as not to attract attention), Carol learns that Daryl and Beth ended up paired together after the prison attack, and Daryl says Beth became strong. “Rick’s gonna wonder where we went,” Daryl adds. “Tank’s running low,” he continues. If the car holds out long enough, they can figure out where Beth is and learn more about who has her. “Then, we’ll do what we gotta do to get her back,” he adds. Heading north on I-85 leads them straight into Atlanta.

Daryl and Carol pull to the side of the road when the car ahead of them stops. There’s two people in the vehicle. One of them gets out. “Is that a cop?” Daryl asks. Carol pulls out her gun as they watch the man walk around the corner. He walks back carrying something that he drops on the ground. A walker spots Carol and Daryl in the car and paws at the window, prompting the “cop” to look in their direction, but he doesn’t see them. He gets into the passenger side and the vehicle drives off.

“Tank’s tapped!” Daryl says. They can’t follow. They’ll have to find shelter for the night before continuing their journey. Inside a building, they walk cautiously through the hallway, Daryl grabbing some keys off of a corpse. “You used to work here or something?” Daryl asks Carol, who knows this place. “Something,” she says.

Carol & Daryl, In The Building: Slowly they move through the hallways. “What’s this place?” Daryl asks his companion Carol. “It’s temporary housing,” she says. A book on the table in a makeshift bedroom gives it away – this place is for abused women and children. “I’ll take the top bunk,” Carol says. “I think that one’s more your style,” she says of the bottom one, which has a pillow covered in flannel. Before resting, the two chat about what’s next – Carol asking Daryl about what he said (in a recent episode) about starting over. “Why don’t you say what’s really on your mind?” he asks her. “I don’t think we get to save people anymore,” she replies. “Why are you here?” he asks her about being on the mission to find Beth. “I’m trying,” she replies. They talk some more and both lay side by side across the bottom bunk. A noise in the distance cuts short the quiet moment.

Moving cautiously down the hall, Daryl has his crossbow ready. The pair find a walker, presumably once a mom, and child walkers, trying to get at them through frosted glass doors. “You don’t have to,” Daryl says, stepping in when Carol moves toward the door handle to put them to rest. “You don’t,” he says again.

The next morning, Carol looks out the window and sees a fire in the building’s courtyard. Daryl’s taken care of the walkers – the former mother and children from the night before — and is burning the bodies. “Thank you,” Carol says, coming out to stand at his side as they watch the flames.

Carol & Tyreese, A Shack In The Woods (From Season 4): While Carol digs graves for Lizzie and Mika, she spots a fire in the distance.

Carol & Daryl Continue The Search For Beth (Present)

Daryl & Carol, In Atlanta: They have to get higher up to see things, Daryl suggests as the two head out into Atlanta in search of more information about Beth. Briskly moving through the city, Carol and Daryl spot walkers around a corner between them and a great vantage point – a bridge. A pad of paper Daryl lights on fire is the perfect distraction, allowing the pair to get around the cluster of walkers.

Making their way swiftly through a car park, the two hit the bridge, and their first vantage point. There’s a man following (it looks like Noah from the Beth episode!) not far behind them. Walkers trapped in their sleeping bags stand between Carol, Daryl and the bridge. “Some days, I don’t know what the hell to think,” Daryl says after they take care of the first batch, and he spots a walker trying to claw its way out of a tent.

After squeezing through a chained up door (the chain is just long enough for them to slip through the crack), Carol and Daryl enter an office untouched by the events of the zombie apocalypse. Looking out over the city gives Carol and Daryl a chance to talk some more. “You still haven’t asked me what happened after I met up with Tyreese [and] the girls,” Carol says, referring to Lizzie and Mika. “I know what happened. They aren’t here,” Daryl says. “It was worse than that,” Carol says. Daryl gets it. “The reason I said we get to start over is ’cause we gotta,” he says.

Movement in the distance prompts Daryl to grab the rifle. Peering through the scope for a closer look, he spots a van with crosses on the back atop another bridge. It could be a clue to finding Beth!

The two head back the way they came when they meet trouble – it’s Noah on the other side of the chain linked door. He grabbed Carol’s gun when she put it through first, so he uses it to his advantage and takes their weapons, slicing open the tent and unleashing a walker on them as he leaves. Carol pulls out her handgun to shoot him as he departs, but Daryl stops her. “He was just a kid,” he says later.

As they walk through a parking structure, Daryl says he knows she’s trying. Carol notes they’ve both changed. “You’re not who you were and neither am I,” she replies. Picking up Daryl’s bag, a book falls out – it’s from the shelter – “Treating Survivors of Child Abuse.”

Carol, Back At The Prison (Season 4): Carol stands over the burning bodies of Karen and David, a cloth over her face in this flashback to when she killed them to try and stop the outbreak at the prison.

The Search For Beth Takes Carol & Daryl To New Highs & Lows (Present)

Carol & Daryl, A Bridge: Reaching the van, which is partially dangling in the air (having broken through the bridge guard rail), Carol and Daryl find it’s empty, but they go inside (despite it being unstable) to look for clues about Beth’s whereabouts. Walkers hear the noise and head toward the van, and just before they have to start fighting for their lives, Daryl finds a gurney with lettering on it. Carol thinks it’s from Grady Memorial.

Jumping out of the van, the two fight, but it’s no use. They have to climb back in the van to escape the walkers, who pound at the now closed doors. Their only hope is to buckle up in the van as it goes over the side. Carol touches Daryl’s hand, scared. “Hold on,” he says as the vehicle tumbles off the bridge, miraculously landing right side up. The airbag opens on the way down, protecting Daryl. “We’re okay,” Carol says.

Getting out of the van, it’s clear Carol’s is hurt. “How bad is it?” Daryl asks further down the road. “I’ve had worse,” she says. It’s her collar bone. “Damn, that was stupid,” he says. “We made good time down,” she quips, making light of the situation. She also notes they are only three blocks from Grady. He thinks they can scope it out from a nearby building.

Daryl & Carol, Inside A Building Near Grady Memorial: As they quietly walk through another building, Daryl grabs a large hunting knife off of a walker. Over at the window, they see Grady Memorial and realize they’ve found the right place, and their watch begins. “You said I ain’t how I was before. How was I?” Daryl asks. “It’s like you were a kid. Now you’re a man,” she says. They talk some more, about what Carol went through with Ed, and after he was gone when she lost Sofia, but their talk is cut short when a door slams in the distance. Heading outside the room, they find a walker, Daryl’s arrow is in its head.

In the distance, a gun goes off. It’s Noah. He’s being attacked by a walker. He manages to shove it off of him and on to Carol, who can’t defend herself because of her injured shoulder. Daryl saves her and runs after Noah, who he catches up with and tackles. A bookcase falls on Noah, pinning him down. “Please,” Noah says, pleading for help with the bookcase crushing him and a walker trying to come in the door. Daryl lights up a smoke from a pack he just picked up and refuses to help the young man. Carol wants Daryl to help but he walks off. Just then, the walker breaks through and dives on Noah. An arrow cuts through the scene. Daryl’s arrow.

Carol After Taking On Terminus (Flashback)

Carol, In The Woods, Outside Terminus: It is in this moment that we find out how Carol got so clean after she took on Terminus single handedly. She takes off her walker drenched poncho and wipes the mud off her face with her shirt, and begins walking.

The Search For Beth Takes A Turn (Present)

Daryl, Carol & Noah, In A Building Opposite Grady Memorial: Now free, Noah says he has to get out of there. “They probably heard the shots,” he says. Putting two and two together, Daryl realizes Noah was at Grady Memorial and asks if he saw “a blonde girl.” “Beth?” Noah asks. “You know her? She helped me get out, but she’s still there,” he adds. Outside the window, Noah is proven right. The Grady Memorial cops did hear the shots. A car with crosses in the windows pulls up outside. Daryl, Carol and Noah make their way to another exit, trying to escape the Grady Memorial “cops.” Carol runs out of the door first.

SMASH! She’s hit by the car and bounces off the windshield and on to the ground. Noah pulls Daryl back. Grady Memorial can treat her. Then, they can go get Carol and Beth. “They’ve got guns. People,” Noah explains of Grady’s set up. “So do we,” Daryl, replies.

Daryl & Noah, On The Road Out Of Atlanta: After lighting another fire in an alleyway to distract a pack of walkers, Daryl and Noah creep through a fence, fire up a truck and head out of the city walls.

“The Walking Dead” continues Sundays at 9 PM ET/PT on AMC.
