‘The Walking Dead’ Recap: Season 5, Episode 7 – ‘Crossed’

“The Walking Dead” did something different in “Crossed,” jumping back and forth between all of the show’s characters, revealing they’re all fighters, but some of them still have lessons to learn.

Here’s our recap of “The Walking Dead” Season 5, Episode 7 – “Crossed”:

Rescue Plans Are Made

Sasha, Tyreese, Daryl, Rick, Fr. Gabriel, Carl, Judith, Michonne & Noah, At The Church: Sasha is bristling, putting her emotions over Bob into chopping up church benches. The group is using the pieces of wood and the organ pipes to fortify the church ahead of their rescue attempt of Beth and Carol. Watching all of this happen is a bordering-on-distraught Father Gabriel. “Are you going to take the cross too?” he asks. “If we need it,” Daryl answers.

Rick and Michonne hash out plans for childcare now that the rescue mission is so close at hand. While both of them are feeling indebted to Carol for her monumental efforts at Terminus, Rick must go to Atlanta because he owes Carol “more,” he explains. After hugging Judith close and giving his baby daughter a kiss, he hands her to Michonne. “I’ll be back soon,” Rick tells Carl, before leaving and shutting the door.

With the rescue party on their way, Michonne and Carl barricade themselves inside the church. Looking at the blood on the floor from the Terminans upsets Fr. Gabriel who scrubs and scrubs it with his bare hands.

On The Road To Atlanta

Sasha & Tyreese, In The Back Of The Truck On The Way To Atlanta: “You know I’ve been there,” Tyreese tells his sister, who continues to hurt over Bob, as they travel in the van Noah and Daryl got in last week’s episode, to Atlanta.

Meanwhile, Back At Grady Memorial

Beth & Carol, Inside Grady Memorial: “Excuse me, I’m just checking on her,” Dr. Steven Edwards says as he brushes past Beth to look in on the new patient (Carol!), who hasn’t woken up yet.

Abraham’s Group Gets A Name

Glenn, Maggie, Tara, Rosita, Abraham & Eugene, On The Road Near The Walker Herd: The road ahead is still filled with the walkers, and Eugene remains unresponsive (after the beating he took from Abraham). Tara is passing time, keeping busy by filling water bottles with what’s left of the fire truck supply. There’s about three-quarters of a bottle for GREATM. “What’s GREATM?” Glenn asks. Why it’s her new name for the group, made up of the first letter of each of their names. “Solidarity. Band of brothers. GREATM,” Tara explains. Worried about Eugene, Glenn wonders if they should try and get him back to the church. Maggie says no. Moving him could make him worse. Over in the road, Abraham is still on his knees. When Rosita delivers his share of the water, he knocks it out of her hands. “Don’t do this, Abraham. Look at me!” she screams. He stands up and stares her down, prompting Maggie to pull a gun on him. “Sit down, or I’ll put you down,” Maggie says. After a stare-off, finally, Abraham lowers himself to the ground. “Well, what’s next on the agenda?” Tara asks, changing the subject.

Making Plans For Attack

Rick, Sasha, Noah, Tyreese, Daryl, A Building In Atlanta: “This is all about us doing it quiet, keeping the upper hand,” Rick says of their attack plan. He’ll take care of Dawn. Noah believes the wards will join their cause. “That’s best case. What’s the worst case?” Tyreese asks. He knows things could go wrong. He suggests capturing her officers and then making a trade – “Theirs for ours,” Tyreese says. “I get it,” Rick replies. “And it might work. This will work,” Rick adds of his plan. But, Daryl chimes in. He agrees with Tyreese’s idea. Dawn’s just trying to keep it together. She’ll make the deal. Rick is caught off guard by Daryl’s response. He looks into Daryl’s eyes and then shrugs it off.

From The Mouths Of Babes

Fr. Gabriel, Carl, Michonne, In The Church: Fr. Gabriel is still cleaning the church floors when Carl comes up. It’s time for self-defense lessons. “You’re lucky your church has lasted this long, “Carl says. “Once you’re out there, you’re going to find trouble you can’t hide from. You need to know how to fight,” he adds. But not today. Fr. Gabriel can’t handle it right now.

Meanwhile, Back At Grady Memorial

Beth & Carol, Inside Grady Memorial: Beth is mopping up when she hears Dawn and an officer talking about how they can’t find Noah. As that conversation ends, things turn to the new patient – Carol. “She was half dead when I brought her in,” the officer tells Dawn, advising her it’s time to pull the plug. Beth joins the conversation, bringing up how much power the officer uses charging his DVD player. “That woman has been here one day. What good is this place if it doesn’t try to save people?” she pleads. Dawn takes the officer’s side. Turn off the machines, she tells Beth.

But wait! When Dawn’s officer leaves, she reveals she had no choice but to side with her officer. So now, it’s up to Beth to save the woman (Carol), Dawn says as she gives her the keys to the drug locker. “Why are you doing this?” Beth asks. “I thought you were weak. You’ve proved me wrong,” Dawn replies.

GREATM & The Case For Eugene

Glenn, Rosita, Tara, Maggie, Abraham & Eugene, Still On The Road: It’s time to find water so Glenn, Tara and Rosita head out, leaving Maggie behind to watch over the men. Creeping through the brush, the trio finds a bunch of walkers trapped under a log pole. “Stay here guys. Don’t get up. There’s nothing for you in Washington,” Tara quips, making light of an unfortunate situation. “That’s not funny,” Rosita says. Tara stops them all from arguing, telling her companions she’s “not dealing” with the D.C. thing. She’s “over it.” She just wants Eugene “to be okay,” and defends him. “He had one skill that kept him living. You’re supposed to be mad at him ’cause he used it?” she asks. “Damn right,” Glenn says. He’s still angry.

Back at the truck, Maggie gets a ladder off of the back, leans it up against the engine and uses a blanket to shield Eugene’s face from the sun. “Get over yourself,” she tells Abraham who remains motionless. “You’re not the only one who lost something today. It’s never gonna get any better than this,” she adds.

Meanwhile, Back At Grady Memorial

Beth & Carol, Inside Grady Memorial: On her mission to save Carol, Beth visits Dr. Steven. “The woman in Exam Room 2 — what medicine would you give her?” she asks. It’s a guessing game, he tells her. “So guess,” she insists. Her comments prompt Dr. Steven to figure things out. He knows she has the drug locker key, but wants to know if Beth took it or Dawn gave it to her. She doesn’t reply, but he does — Carol needs Epinephrine. “She’ll have a shot,” he adds.

GREATM & The Muddy Waters

Glenn, Tara & Rosita, At A Stream: “Perfect,” Glenn says, looking at how horribly muddy the bottle is after dipping it in the stream. But, there’s hope. Eugene taught Rosita how to make a water filter out of a bottle. She also reveals her backstory as they sit there watching the water drip out of the makeshift filter. She was with other people, fighting “dead ones,” when she crossed paths with Abraham in Dallas. “He saw what I could do and he wanted my help,” she explains. “He was the first person to ask me for that since this all started,” she adds. Just then, Glenn spots ripples in the water. Fish are nearby. They might eat tonight.

Grady Memorial Vs. Rick’s Gang

Rick, Sasha, Daryl, Tyreese & Noah, In Atlanta: Grady Memorial officers chase down Noah, who is acting as bait, cutting him off with their car. He drops his weapons and is cuffed. But where are the “rotters” Noah was shooting at, the officers wonder. “Hands!” Right on cue, Rick’s group comes out of their hiding spot, guns drawn. They take their weapons and begin to tie them up. One of the officers notices Rick. “Were you a cop? Well, believe it or not, I was too,” the man says. Just after Noah tells Rick that that particular officer was one of the “good ones,” Grady backup drives in, guns blazing. The Grady officers jump in the back of the car and it drives off. Sasha manages to hit one of the wheels, putting the car out of service a short while away. Walking through a field of decomposing walkers, Daryl ends up on his own. After making sure no one is hiding inside of burned out RV, Daryl shuts the door. Oh no! On the other side is a big Grady officer who tackles him to the ground, right in between two decaying (but hungry) walkers. Somehow, Daryl manages to find the eye sockets on one of them. Digging his fingers in, he rips the head off the body and uses it as a weapon, cracking it into the big cop’s skull. The man gives up when Rick comes in with a gun. “You win, a**hole,” he says. But Rick won’t put the gun down. “Rick. Rick. Rick. Three’s better than two,” Daryl says. Rick knows he’s right and puts down his weapon.

Inside an empty warehouse, the female officer tells them they might not be able to make the deal work. “If you let us go, we’ll take care of Dawn ourselves,” she suggests. The other officer, the one Noah vouched for, suggests another plan that could result in what he thinks Dawn wants — “peaceful resolution.”

GREATM Goes Fishin’

Glenn Tara & Rosita, Out In The Woods: Glenn, Tara and Rosita take out the under-the-log walkers and cut up their jackets for the mesh. Deep in the dirt underneath one of them, Tara finds a backpack. She scans the contents later while Glenn and Rosita fish with the mesh. They catch one, but can Rosita clean them? Yes, she tells Glenn. “Good, we’re gonna need that — wherever we all wind up. You in?” he asks her, setting his mind on the future. She is. “You guys, you will never believe what’s in this bag,” Tara says holding up a clump of something.

Meanwhile, Back At Grady Memorial

Beth & Carol, At Grady Memorial: Another orderly faking a cough provides Beth the opportunity she needs to get the meds. Sneaking into Carol’s room, Beth strings up a bag of vital fluids and puts it into Carol’s IV line. Then, she gets the Epinephrine ready and injects her friend. “Carol? It’s Beth,” she says, holding her unconscious friend’s hand. “I just wanted you to know that I was here.”

Brotherly Love

Sasha & Tyreese, Near A Warehouse In Atlanta: While dealing with weapons ahead of their next step, Sasha’s shirt gets torn, setting her off again. Tyreese knows it’s not about the clothing. “You got to say goodbye. He saw it. He felt it and you can hold on to whatever you want to, but I think you should hold on to that,” he tells her, referring to the late Bob. Sasha says she should have been able to do it herself, referring to stopping Bob from turning, which Tyreese did for her. “You let me help you,” Tyreese replies before the two hug.

Back At the Church

Father Gabriel, At The Church: For some reason, Fr. Gabriel sneaks out from a passageway under his floor. After inching his way through a crawl space, he trips outside after stepping on a nail that ends up in his boot and foot. Yanking it out, he manages to limp off somewhere.

Later, in the forest, a walker attacks Gabriel, and perhaps inspired by Carl, he fights back and body slams the walker into the ground. Picking up a rock over his head, Gabriel is about to finally kill a walker when he sees a cross around its neck. He stops and cries.

Making It Right With Bob 2.0?

Sasha, The Grady Memorial Officers, A Warehouse In Atlanta: “Damn it,” the officer, who recently revealed his first name is “Bob,” says. Sasha walks over to find out what’s wrong. He saw a “rotter” in the parking lot who he knew. His name was Tyler. They were sent to Grady when things went down. Now, he’s outside and a walker. Sasha wants to help him like Tyreese helped her, but smartly, she says she’ll do it from inside the warehouse as she’s a “good shot.”

GREATM Finds Their Strength Again

GREATM, Still In The Road: Abraham is still on his knees when Maggie walks over to hand him her water bottle. He’s not moving so she squats down. He thought he wanted her to shoot him earlier, but then realized he actually didn’t. He wants to live. A gurgling sound near the front of the truck makes her run to Eugene. He’s waking up! Finally, Abraham drinks some of the water.

As Rosita, Glenn and Tara walk back (she’s got a yo-yo now!), he seems like he’s past what happened with Eugene, and positive again.

A Double Cross

Sasha, “Bob,” A Warehouse In Atlanta: Grady’s Bob directs Sasha to where his old friend, who’s now a “rotter,” is. “I see him. Are you sure that’s him?” she asks, peering through the scope on her gun, leaving Bob behind her. It doesn’t matter if it is or it isn’t. He uses his body to knock Sasha into the glass, knocking her out.
