‘This Is Us’ Cast Reacts To Heart-Wrenching Episode

Milo Ventimiglia warned us when he tweeted out a sick note on Tuesday – one he suggested
fans might need for their bosses or schools on Wednesday after watching what he said was going to be a “very emotional” episode of “This Is Us.”

(Spoiler alert! This story contains details from the episode.)

And the actor didn’t oversell it in the slightest. The NBC drama delivered another emotionally heart-wrenching episode on Tuesday night when Randall’s biological father, William Hill, lost his battle with cancer.

The cast and executive producer turned to social media before, during and after the episode’s airing to show how much the heartbreaking episode affected them too.

“This Is Us” creator and Executive Producer Dan Fogelman shared a letter he previously gave to the cast after the episode aired, on Twitter. And – grab the tissues – it’s also going to pull at your
heartstrings.

He wrote:

A note to the reader from Dan, and particularly to Mr. Ron Cephas Jones:

It’s never easy writing the death scene of one of your favorite characters (and actors). I hope we’ve done you proud – you certainly always deliver for us.

And if anyone is extra sad about this ending, I’d urge you to remember the words of a wise young actor named Justin Hartley who once said:

People will die in our lives, people that we love. But it’s kind of beautiful if you think about it, the fact that just because someone died, it doesn’t mean they’re not still in the painting.

Sterling K. Brown, who plays Randall, took to Facebook on Tuesday night, to talk about the episode.

“I’ve seen this episode a few times now, and … still gets me,” he said.

He revealed he’s tried to get Ron Cephas Jones, who has played William, to join a social media.

“I gotta tell Ron to get on social media so he can know just how much he is appreciated and how much he is loved,” Sterling said.

As he addressed fans, Sterling got emotional.

“It’s not my goal to like bring you to tears. That happens to be a byproduct of what we do. Tears do happen to come, but I want you to feel, I want you to feel connected and recognize that we’re all in this together, you know? And that no man or woman is an island unto themselves. And if you have family that you haven’t talked to in a while or, friends that you feel that you’ve
gotten out of touch with, then call them up, and let ’em know how much love ’em and how much you care because tomorrow is not promised,” he said, with tears in his eyes.

Chrissy Metz, who plays Randall’s sister, Kate, praised the performances of her co-stars, as she was one of the many brought to tears by the episode.

“I couldn’t tweet through the tears. I have no words just love & admiration. @sterlingkb1 #roncephasjones @Dan_Fogelman,” she tweeted.

Susan Kelechi Watson, who plays Randall’s wife, Beth, tweeted simply, “I know. I know. …#ThisIsUs.”

Before the episode aired, Mandy Moore, who plays Randall’s mom, Rebecca Pearson, tweeted, “An outstanding standalone episode with 2 giants (@sterlingkb1 and #roncephasjones). How lucky we are to witness the magic tonight. #thisisus.”
