Top 12 Headlines Of 2012: Call Me Maybe Invades The World (#12)

There’s no “Maybe” about it – in 2012, the pop world was owned by Carly Rae Jepsen.

As AccessHollywood.com counts down The Top 12 Headlines Of 2012, we start with the 27-year-old Canadian singer who shot to superstardom seemingly overnight, on the success of her smash single “Call Me Maybe.”

Having sold more than 6.1 million copies (according to Nielsen SoundScan) to date, the song continues to break records and hold its spot as a pop tune powerhouse to this day. The song was covered everywhere and by everyone – from Lil’ Wayne to Justin Bieber & Selena Gomez to Cookie Monster and even the U.S. Olympic Swim Team.

Billboard even named the contagiously catchy tune as its top Song of Summer, beating out Maroon 5, Gotye and Katy Perry, and in October, the music mag dubbed the pop cutie the Rising Star of 2012.

And, of course, she owes it all to… Justin Bieber.

“[Justin] was home for Christmas, in Canada, and just around the same time my song was starting to play on the radio, and I guess he heard it and he liked it,” Carly told Access Hollywood back in April, of how she was discovered by Justin. “The moment that I signed the contract and I flew out to meet him, I had no idea what to expect and he blew away all my expectations.”

And while Carly – who actually first burst onto the scene as the third-place finisher on “Canadian Idol” in 2007 — says 2012 has been a “surreal year,” she admits she definitely feels the pressure to build on her newfound uber success. Find out how she plans to keep her momentum going, HERE.

With a whopping 338 million (and counting) YouTube views of “Call Me Maybe,” along with wins at the 2012 American Music Awards, the MTV Europe Awards and more, “Call” us crazy, but it doesn’t appear anyone is getting tired of Carly Rae Jepsen anytime soon.
