UPDATE: Jamie Spears Granted Conservatorship Over Daughter Britney

Jamie Spears, the father of pop star Britney Spears was made the temporary legal conservator of his daughter following a ruling in a Los Angeles courtroom on Friday afternoon.

Jamie and Britney’s mother, Lynne Spears, entered a Los Angeles courtroom early Friday afternoon. Jamie filed the petition, asking a probate court to establish a conservatorship over Britney.

Commissioner Reva Goetz sat on the bench and handed down the decision.

As a result of the conservatorship, Jamie will have power over his daughter, allowing him to make decisions on Britney’s behalf including those related to her residence, credit cards and finances. Jamie will have the power to change the locks on her homes and has access to Britney’s liquid assets. He can also ask for restraining orders on behalf of his daughter.

Jamie will also be able to hire and fire attorneys for Britney.

The order will remain in effect until Monday when attorneys will need to bring in additional paperwork to get the temporary order extended.

The court session began on Friday, shortly before noon, when Lynne and Jamie, flanked by half a dozen people, among them several attorneys, walked down the hall in an LA Superior Courthouse building.

Jamie and Lynne appeared visibly upset with red eyes, giving the appearance that they had been crying.

During the morning session, the two sat in the courtroom, separated by an attorney.

After whispered discussions, the two were taken into a back room.

Shortly thereafter, the court broke for lunch and the next hearing was set up for the 1:30 PM docket.

Rumors began circulating early Friday morning that the Spears were also planning to ask for a temporary restraining order against their daughter’s self-proclaimed “manager,” Sam Lutfi.

According to the Public Information Director, Lutfi was named in a temporary restraining order, which was requested by Jamie. A hearing regarding the restraining order on Lutfi was set for February 24.

Commissioner Goetz’s decision was handed down shortly before 2:30 PM.

Jamie wanted the judge to seal all the documents, but Commissioner Goetz made no immediate ruling, choosing to take the request under consideration.

Britney’s father also wanted reporters to be removed from the courtroom but Goetz said he saw no reason to grant the request.

Earlier in the session the commissioner ruled against a motion to allow cameras in the courtroom.
